I am building an oliver diesel engine with 400 cu. in. I need a good sealant to seal up a solid copper head gasket. I will have 20:1 compression and the wet sleeves have .004 protrusion. Will copper coat or permatex do the job or are there other sealants that are better?

Lynn, I am glad to hear your project is coming along. You must be getting close to firing it up pretty soon. Tim makes good points about the copper gasket. The only thing I might add is that some people I know make some of the water and oil holes a bit large and then place an "O" ring in the opening with the gasket laying on the block. They feel it gives them a bit more insurance for sealing. hen again I had a copper head gasket with no additional sealer on a tractor for over ten years without any sealing problems.

Good luck,
A.P.

I'd try the brush on permatex first. It would be a good time to get studs and use them instead of the OEM head bolts. Be sure to use a soft copper gasket. Make sure it has been annelled (spelling?)
