Hi Phil
At a recent Tractor show in Eaton Ohio I picked up a tip from a fellow with a "B" that was out pulling evreyone even the 70 we were pulling.
He said that he runs smaller front tires on his tractor and that for every ince smaller in diameter it adds 400 pounds of extra force to the rear wheels, and after watching this guy pull I'd have to say he knows something about what he's talking about.
As for performance parts Dinglers Tractor has a large stock of power blocks, heads big nut carbs ect. if you would want there address let me know and I'll get it for you.
As for the comment from AC-D17 Yes there are guys out here like myself that pull bone stock Two Cylinders and NO WERE NOT SCARED!
I think a better question would be how many bone stock tractors are really in the Field Stock Class. I know ours are! But I also can tell you the majority are not! Bob

I pull what I belive to be a stock 1949 JD A.I say stock, because I have not modified it.It may have been bored out for stock ring replacement, but I belive it has stock pistons and rods.
I have pulled against another JD A and a Farmal M. I have been within 6" of the other 3 in 5500 # class and within 10" in the 6000# class, giving up 250 #,
on the same 3 tractors, because I don't have enough wheel weights yet. This Was a NATPA class A or 1 entered pull.
I belive this had been a fair pull with each tractors weight and RPM for its respective engine compared by the same person with the same meter.
From what I have read here and on other puller forums, I belive this pull to be an exception rather than the rule.!

I pull a truely stock JD70 gas, and I haven't come close to being competitive yet with it. I have a straight pipe on in place of the muffler and this weekend I'm going to try it with an open intake on the carb like I've seen all the red guys I pull against doing. By the way, I see a lot of "Denny's" stickers around and judging by the talk there aren't any truely stock red tractors either. I haven't done much pulling this year, but there have been very few JD's, maybe that's some sort of indication of something heh?

Check your carb to see if your A has the DLTX 71. With the proper modifications, the air/gas mixture can be adjusted to equal a big nut carb. The rational is that the 51 was feeding a all-fuel tractor providing a richer mix where as the 71 was found more on gas models. Certainly something to think about.

Call a good rebuilder like Motec or Roberts and ask them for their opinion based on experiences.

Phil,
Power block is good, but hard to find and expensive, (big cubes do most good in heavier classes) Big nut carb is power maker, (so I've been told)
Fix your radiator (you can't leak fluids on track)
I made a dual manifold to fit my A (looks good, but power increase is ??)
Drop me an e-mail and I'll share my experiences thus far in making my A a puller.
