Dale, don't mess around with the WC engine. It has a 4 in stroke stock. You want to start with a D-17 or Gleaner E engine. They have 3 inch mains in them and are 4.5 inch stroke to start with. You can go to 5.25 without much grinding on the block or altering the oil pan. Anything over that and you have some work to do. That is fine for Div III, if you are going to do Div IV or V you might as well start with a 6 inch stroke and 4 5/8 bore or you will be in the back of the pack.

Stroking a WC is like they say. How much do you want to spend? There are guys around here running 4.5X6. They really will pull. Most are using the 45 block. It is a little stronger. Big valves and a little porting, then add a big carb. to feed it. Hope this helps.

I'm trying to stroke mine to 5 inches. We've tried three cranks and haven't found a good one yet. They have all been cracked at the no. four journal. It seems that they had trouble with these cracking. I think I'm going to try a new one. As for what you can do, it depends on how much you want to spend. Find a good engine builder or machine shop and see what he tells you. If you want to go the easy way, you can put oversize Allis pistons in. They are 4 1/8".
