I was thinking about buying a 450LP head for my international 400 for doing some div. 2 pulling. Now let me start out by saying even though it is div. 2 I would like to have atleast 70hp. Now would I be better of buying ones of those solid gold 450LP heads or taking my 400 head and having it ported and polished? Who around northeast Indiana is good at that type of work? What does it cost usually? Thanks for any inputs.

I belive you can gain a lot with head and carb work. open her up as big as possible and polish the snot out of it. getting fuel into the cylinders is the name of the game. More fuel = more power.

O and Adam ,,,don't waste money and time screwing up a good head,,port and polish is NOT for your type of pulling, all you will do is realise that you made someone else richer and you spent your time and money in the wrong place, this is where lots of pullers go wrong they listen to the wrong people and end up making bad choices,,there are lots of places that a puller in your type of pulling will benefit and won't cost a TON of money.,,,,, Adam just remember that torque is what you need for STOCK pulling,,,"think about that"..... ..... ..FULLPULLER#1

I do agree with most of your comments but if he isn't going to rebore the motor than i belive alot can be gained in head work. Instead of an Lp i would just shave the gas pretty good, or just get a extremly thin copper gasket. Compression is horsepower which getss the tractor going

Adam,,,Was your motor rebuilt just in the last year or so??,,,If not,,then rebuild it and use some 1/4in dome pistons in it,use your 400 head and make shure the valves and guides are top noch,,then get your self a W-9 carb,,and L.P. monifold,,after you get time on the motor ,,,hook up to the dyno and tune,,and use 90 oct. fuel,,you comp. will be right for this ,,,,,OK?

ADAM I HAVE A 1953 SUPER M HAD ENGINE REBUILT 2 YEARS AGO !!! 4.125 X 5.25 HAD THE HEAD OPENED UP REAL BIG !!! THROUGH THAT IN SCRAP PILE !!!!
MISTAKE !!! LOST VACUUM !!!
BOUGHT A 400 HEAD TOOK .04 OFF THE HEAD AND INSTALLED A .02 COPPER GASKET !!! ALSO L.P MANIFOLD !!! DIDN'T PUT TRACTOR BACK ON DYNO !!!
DRASTIC INPROVEMENT !!!! NIGHT AND DAY !!!
BUT THAT STILL ISN'T ENOUGH. TRACTOR PULLING IS GETTING TOUGH !!! SPEND SOME MONEY ON BORE AND STROKE !!!! SORRY !! I HAD TO MANY GREAT HOOKS AND HAD THE MOTOR GO SILENT !!!! SILENCE IS A BAD THING WHEN TRACTOR PULLING !!!! PORTING AND POLISHING IS A VERY DANGEROUS THING (TORQUE) CARB VENTURI !!! COMPRESSION , ALL THINGS THAT HAVE TO BE LEARNED !!! I HAVE STARTED A SCRAP PILE OF MY MISTAKES, BUT IN TIME YOU'LL SPEND LESS AND GET MORE !!! THAT'S THE FUN OF PULLING
JUST MY 4 CENTS
