If you are powering out, you must have an A with overdrive, not the creeper shift. I had a 49 A that would power out in low, but have never seen a 51 or 52 power out. The horspower is the same on both, but not the gearing. Russ

There have been a few fellows who claim 60 hp with out stroking. I think that may be a bit of a stretch.Since you are talking only 60 hp I assume that you are stock pulling. All 60 hp is going to allow you to do is pull in second gear instead of first. The 1.5 to 2.5 mph. wheel speed increase isn't really going to make any difference. Stock pulling is all about the right tires, tire pressure,and getting your tractor weighed and balanced properly. As long as you have enough hp to spin out in first gear you can be competitive with any other tractor in a stock class. As long as hitch and weight and balance are at optimum for your tractor. Save the money on engine parts and work on these things that don't cost anything. Good Luck.

Joel;

I pulled a few times this year and I most of the time pull till it dies. I am at 50ish HP now. I pull first gear only so I feel I need more HP. Most of the tractors I pull with are in the 55 to 60 HP range. Thanks for your input, Allen

You can get your 60hp John Deere A if you use a Powerblock. I just sold a 55hp JD-A. It had the powerblock with 6.125" high compression pistons, cold manifold that was ported out, head shortened down to the browes and ported with big valves, big nut G carb, hot mag. Also removed the oil bath filter in favor of a paper air filter. Needed a pulling cam and it probably would be right around 60hp. I pulled it 4500# thru 6000# antique and farm classes, in both 3.5 and 5mph classes. Your best bet is to get some pressed wheels and run as light of classes as you can.
