In relation to the power stroke of a four cycle engine, how does the deisel injection timing and duration compare? During the injection duration is it optimal to have constant fuel flow or variable flow? I suppose with mechanical injection it is impossible to avoid the ramp up and down of the injection rate of fuel. I would appreciate any insight I can get on this topic....ToddF

I would say that is going to depend on the type of engine, application, speed and dozens of other factors. One of the benefits of electronic unit injection is the ability to control duration of injection, injection pressure, timing and so forth, for maximum power, efficiency and reduced emissions. You can even have "pilot injection", which basically divides the injection process into two parts, to aid in cold weather starting. I don't know if anyone has played with electronic fuel injection in the pulling world. It would be interesting to see.
