Hey boys, have any of you ever bored a 70 Oliver? How far can a guy go? How far can you stroke one before you need to do excessive grinding?

Thanks,

Gary

I have a 70 with 3 9/16" bore and a 5 7/8" stroke. Lubbock Gaskets made a copper head gasket for it. There was a lot of grinding done on the cam and block. The oil pan had to be almost completely redone. Personally I would never build another one this far again. So far the engine has been reliable. It is putting out well over a hundred HP. I have pulled it from the 3500 to the 6000. I pull every class in third gear, only because of a 4 1/2 mph speed limit, so far it's not even thought about pulling down.

Gary,My 70 3.5 x 5.5 The cam and block work wasn't that bad.The oil pan needed extensive work to get clearance though. TL Bair - What did you do for a head gasket?

Ted, I made one out of .025 soft copper sheet and used
silicon around the coolant passages. What have you
done to the bottom end to get 5.5 stroke? I am out
of room between cam and rods at 5.375.

Thanks for the info Ted. I have been looking for a smaller journal diameter rod but had been looking mostly in the automotive field with no success.

Your welcome TL,Always like to talk with someone who has some experience with the 70.It's kind of a "b*st**d" tractor in the Oliver line. Can be a LOT of fun in the right classes though!

Also check the classifieds on this site. I have
bought valves, springs, etc. for my 70's right from people on this site.

Casey,If the motor is stuck you are likely going to need more than a top end kit.Felpro still makes a full gasket set (FS 7370 S).A great source for Oliver parts including gaskets is Maibach's in Creston Ohio. There number is 330-939-4192.You will find it can be harder to find certain parts for the 70 compared to other models but that makes the completed project that much more rewarding.Good Luck!

Gary,

I built an Oliver 70 with a 3 5/8 bore using turned down Oliver 77 liners and still run a full
cooling system, I spose you could go further if
you poured the block full of epoxy. 5 3/8 is about
the max stroke acheivable. I have ground about
half way through the cam for rod clearance. You
could probably go 4 3/4 to 4 7/8 from the stock
4 3/8 without to much grinding.
