Thinking about getting into antique tractor pulling and trying to gather all the information I can. I have read alot on the tractor pulling and regular discussion boards, and I am confused. I thought antique tractor pulling was for old stock farm tractors, but all I read about is stroking, boring, different pistons, different rods, different heads, MORE POWER. Are the pullers that are talking about all these modifications pulling in antique classes?

Dan;

Go to the this link and read the rules. This will help clarify the rules per Div.. I pull with a club that pulls in northern Ind. We pull about 18 times a year from North Wester west to Crown Point. We have two classes a Div 3 and a Div 1 basicly. Our farm stock class (Div 1) is more or less a stock out of the field class 56 or older. Hope this helps BUDD ('';'')

It depends how far you want to travel week after week. In eastern Iowa and SW Wisconsin we have two clubs that have stock farm tractor pulls with 16 inch drawbar, standard factory original rpm and no cut tires. More info available upon request. Where are you located?

I live just south of Kalamazoo Mich. Does your stock farm tractor pulls allow any modifications to the motor to make more power?
Thanks Dan

For the most part no, but there is some going on. Can not see inside to tell type of thing. No different than any other club. We say all factory parts.

DON'T NO WHAT BRAND OF TRACTOR YOU HAVE, BUT IN ALL TRACTOR PULLING, (3) THINGS ARE IMPORTANT, IN THIS ORDER!!!!
(1) FIND THE BEST SET OF OLD TIRES YOU CAN, WIDEN THE RIMS TO WHAT THAT TIRE CALLES FOR !!!!
IMPORTANT. TRACTION IS EVERYTHING!!!
(2) SPEND ALL THE MONEY YOU CAN ON THE MOTOR!!!
PERIOD, AND KEEP THAT A SECRET !!!! DON'T EVEN TELL YOUR LOVELY WIFE, WHAT'S IN THE MOTOR !!! JUST GIVE HER THE BILLS !!!! HA---HAAA!!
(3) YOU HAVE TO BALANCE THE TRACTOR !!! PUTTING THE WEIGHTS IN THE RIGHT SPOT !!! THAT COMES FROM PRACTICE !!!
(4) YOU WILL MEET ALOT OF PEOPLE, MOST ARE GREAT
SOME ARE SPITEFULL JUST LIKE IN LIFE!!!!
(LAST) DON'T TAKE PULLING TO SERIOUS, BUT GIVE IT (#ELL)

The trouble is a lot of div. 4 tractors are dropping to div3 and div. 3 to div 2. There is not many stock tractors in div.2 anymore, the speed limit helps to even things out but on a power track you better have more than stock hp.

Let me see if I understand this correctly. Divisions 3, and 4 are all stock antique tractors with no modifications to the engines for more power. So are they making their tractors lighter to get them in lower weight classes so they have more power than the stock tractors in that class? Is it within the rules to make your tractor lighter than it came from the manufacturer?

"Old Stock Tractor" that's the only way to go! no hassle, no pressure, you don't have to keep up with the MONEY guys. Just go have a good time! If its what you enjoy do whatever you choose.

The no hassle, no pressure, not keep up with the money guys is the kind of antique tractor pulling that I am interested in. Do classes like that actually exist, that your tractor must be stock as it came from the manufacturer? Thanks for your help. Dan

There are a few pulling clubs that I pull with around the Grand Rapids, Michigan area. They seem to be pretty good about keeping the tractors in the classes that they belong in. As an example, earlier this year I was supposedly 10th in the line up to pull in my weight class, but all of a sudden I was told to pull up to the sled as the 4th puller... the track judge told me that I was moved up because some Hot Rods" were put into the wrong class. I pull with a stock 52 JD G, and have had a lot of fun so far!

Lots of luck, once you are bitten by the bug, it's all down hill from there!

Hello Matt, Thanks for letting me know that I can use a stock tractor at the pulls and have fun, without putting a lot of money in it to make a lot of POWER. I take it that your JD G is stock as it came from the manufacturer as far as bore, stroke, compresion, head, pistons and etc. and you can still be competitive and have fun pulling your G when in the proper class. What is the weight classes for the stock tractors at your track and do they use manufacturers weight or what it actually weighs on their scales? Example:if a tractors manufacturer weight is 5080lbs,and you could lighten it up to 4990 with driver, which class would you be allowed to pull in, 4000 or 5000? Do you belong to a pulling club in your arera, and if so would you mind telling me their name and location? How many times a year do you get to pull without traveling over a 100 miles one way?

I'm not sure there is a pure stock class around here, but we do run stock 1st gear 3.5 mph. You can do what you want to the innards of you rig. However the block must be stock appearing, carb manifold must be reasonably stock. The motor must be one that came on your tractor from the mfg. or a direct replacement. We pull in upstate SC. SATPA in Jefferson/Pageland SC. Lots of fun and lively discussion from time to time. One of the best tracks around.
