How does one go about lightening up one of these tractors for the 4500 pound class. Is it a great big problem to lighten them up or not too difficult.

It shouldn't be to hard. We can get our M's in 4500 pretty easy, an SM wouldn't be much different. Switch to steel rims, cut the deck off, built a front end. The SMTA might be another story. One of the guys around here used to run a SMTA. He built a deck and front end, but I don't think he could get into 4500. They swapped their rear end and TA for a straight rear end. Their SM will pull 4500 with the cast deck, I think.

I believe you could get a SM down to 4500 stripping everything off not needed and adding extras like an alluminum radiator.

I got one question for ya, how would you get a SM-TA down to 5000 let alone 4500, I pull a field fresh SM-TA and I tip right in at 6500. 4500 might be possible if you want to take the torque and the PTO out, but why bother when you can just buy a SM.

I am going to a pull tomorrow, I have to check the scales to see if their accurate. I tipped in right at 6500 last pull!

I WISH I could get down to 5900, I bet you have all your wheel wieghts off, I leave two pairs on each wheel as it is a farm tractor, not a puller. I never felt like taking them off for a couple of pulls just to need to put them back on when I have to head to the fields.

Do your SM-TA's pull well? I pull off the stock drawbar and still beat some of my friends with souped-up M's and SM's- Plus, they run first gear, I go for none other than 2nd!

the answer is yes they pull very well. You are right there are no wheel weights on the tractor. If you take your wheel weights off then run 4 pieces of threaded rod or long bolts you can stack the two weights on each side and remove them very easlily. It is a pain to be switching weights on and off all the time especially with the factory method. We always pull in second gear you will just spin out in first.
