Is it possible to get a 4020 John Deere into the 5500# weight class? What has to be done?

It is possible, but it will be very time consuming. Basically, throw away everything but the engine, and trans/rear housing and a set of tires and LIGHT wheels. Have some light weight sheet metal fabricated, light weight front end and you'll be just about there. Probably have to go to an aluminum oil pan and maybe even an industrial engine that is quite a bit lighter than the regular ag model.

Next problem is what are you gonna do with it. If you plan on running from 5500#s on up, some of your components might not stand the stress of the heavier classes, and the light weight engine won't stand but so much pressure.

It is possible, but is it worth it?

6500#s is a more attainable weight with much less work. It still will require a fair amount of work, and removing all the hydraulics, and unnecessary goodies for a 4020. A 4010 would be a slight bit easier.
