We are putting a 195 motor in a 88, has anyone had experience with putting sparkplugs in the 310 diesel heads, how do they flow? Block is drilled for 310 head, and we have both gas and diesel heads. I'm leaning for the diesel head unless someone gives good reason to run the 12 port 1850 gas head instead.

I don't know if the diesel head will make much of a difference unless you are running an open or high rpm class. As far as the mechanics go, call Brad Maibach of Maibach Tractor near Creston, Ohio. He has converted a number of these heads and can help you out.

Good Luck,
A.P.

High rpm class, cast manifolds only, updraft carb, anysize, most likely going to turn 3800 to 4500 rpms. 12:1 compression on high octane fuel most likely.

There is a good chance that you will not out flow a regular 12 port head especially with a little flow work. If you were planning on running 5000-6000 rpm them you would probably be better off with the converted diesel head. Call Brad and see what he recommends.

Take care,
A.P.

I am no oliver expert,, but have heard that the 12 port head is good for an extra 10+ hp on a gas setup,, Diesil heads does not have a compression chamber,, it is in the block like a wedge engine,, Either way you have got nothing to lose,, Tim C may be able to help you.. ChadS

The only reason to run a diesel head is for RPM's. If you're not going to turn it over 3000 stay with the 12 port. the diesel head isn't that hard to convert. Drill and tap it for 10mm spark plugs(weedeater), You'll have to set the combustion chamber up like an Allis by either finding a piston with a big dish in it or leaving the piston down in the block. The extra trouble isn't worth it, I've beat some good crossflow heads with a better 12 bort head @ 6500 rpms.
