Hi,, Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to all!! I was wondering,, what would be a good way to build a deadman hand throttle for a 460,, not using the stock steering collumn, would like to have it beside the seat or close to the instrement panel,, I have materials,, but Just am not sure how to do this task,, I have the stock governor linkage too,, Any suggestions would be great,, Thanks,, ChadS

After reading the other posts on the subject, I think the guys with the idea of using the boat control and cable are on the right track. Assuming you're still running a governor, I'd remind the folks who suggested some sort of spring connected to the carb that the governor itself already provides that spring; what you'd need to do is to connect a return spring to the governor throttle arm. For universal availability, I'd suggest using the dual-type carb return spring used on Chevys, as they're available from GM dealers, rod shops, and parts stores everywhere.

What I DON'T recommend is what Dad used for a carb return spring on his '67 International 3/4-ton pickup once my brother and I started driving...which was a Farmall H brake-return spring. It kept us out of the gas all right, but it also might explain why my right leg muscles were always stronger than my left!!!

I know people use controls from boats. I work at a boat dealer and have sold used parts to pullers.
Just make sure that if you use one brand of control box that you get the same brand of cables, they all connect different. Any lenght cables, usually start at 7'. The control boxes don't have a deadman feature though, wouldn't be hard to make one with a return spring. Control box would bolt right to a fender.

A throttle cable from a boat works good. It has enough length and already has the handle and resistance mechanism. Hope this helps.

Chads;

What about a brake set up like on a bicycle or motorcycle with the cable? I would think this would work. Put a spring on the carb somewhere for the return action. You could mount a peice of pipe right beside the seat to mount this to. Just a thought!
