After reading the previous posts about carb shops what are some of the tricks that the carb shops should do other than changing venturies and jets on 400cid plus engines.[farmall M]

The carb needs to be bored (throttle Plate) to 1.700. Venturi around 1.200, main around .100 & Idel fuel around .028
This worked well for me. Hope this helps.

Changing jet size and venturi size in a M carb is all you can to to dial it in. If you want more of a bolt on modification,, use the bowl off the 806 gas,, has a large metering stem, just a bit bigger jet size,, and will be machined out for the big venturis. You could have the htrottle body bored out, and use the big butterfly in it,, but you need to make sure your engine is asking for more air,, run a comp, test,, anything over 200psi,, will be ok,, 225-250 is more like it. but a stock carb, throttle body should be just fine,, just work with the jet and metering stem, or, use the 806 base,, Hope this helps,, CHadS

You need about a 2" throttle plate with aprox. a 1.5" venturi. My M is 579 ci and using above specs.
