I have a 720 diesel with electric start, non Roll-o-matic narrow front, pressed steel wheels with 18.4 Field & Roads or 16.9 Deep Treads. Am I going to get it down to 7500lb? Has anyone else done this?

What sort af classes are you guys refering to when you say the 720/730's do better in heavy? The only classes we have in this area that are that heavy are farm stock classes where we are pulling against 560's, 4320's, 180's, 7000's, even light 56 series IH. Are you refering to strictly antique classes that heavy or are you beating up on all these bigger newer tractors with the old two poppers? If you are, let me know what your doing because so far our 730 and our 80 haven't been real consistant, yet.

Thanks
Alan

Alan,

I pull mainly in antique classes(pre-1960). Some places we pull allow up to 1970 historic classes and we pull against 3020s and 4020s with quite a bit of success. I have tangled with 4020s @9500 lbs and they have power but are too light to achieve a good balance. Most places also have speed limits in these classes.

7500lb. is easy but, I have drove a 730 diesel electric start in the 6500lb. It was stripped and was unable to have any weights on it.

I have a 720 Diesel-pony start that weighs about 7700 lbs with no 3pt hitch, no elephant ears, roll-a-matic front, 16.9x38 firestone on 16" wheels, 1/2 tank of fuel and a 240 lb driver. I would guess that the electric start would weigh somewhere around 150 to 200 lbs less than the pony. The pony weighs about 350 lbs, but you have extra batteries and the starter and plate are not light either. Don't eat breakfast and you should be able to make it. Also keep 5 gal of fuel or less in the tank.

you could get a 720 down to 7500. My dad pulls with a 730 and he figured out that the heavier you get it the better it does. You should try adding wheel weights or making a weight bracket for it.

There is no doubt that a 720 likes to be heavy. With 16.9 tires, it doesn't start to pull well until it weighs at least 10,000 lbs. We pull down to 8500, but not very well. 9500 does ok, but 10500 is where it's at for a 720. Have a local guy that pulls a 620 and doesn't pull any less than 10,500. He rarely finished outside the top 3.

Our 730 likes it heavy too. With 15.5's fenders no 3 pt it is 7500,, but,, it is a gas model. It does not like to pull that light,, it pulls 9500, better, 11,500 a whole lot better. 2nd gear. I like those 20 and 30 series Deeres. I seen a 720 sell at an auction new years day, sold for 1500!!!!! original, had 3 pt. gas model too. We pull dead weight with our 730,, now has duels on it, 2 sets of wheel weights on the wheels, (cast centers) and a whole lot of weight behind the axle. I would think that an elect start 720D should make 7500, Pony 720 would be alot heavier,, right?? CHad
