I have a friend who bought a pulling tractor and it shoots sparks out the exhaust. The guy they bought if from says it is because of advanced timming? The tractor is a NA diesel with big pump and injectors. What causes this?

Tell him not to worry about it.Working ground at night, ours would blow flame out the stack about 3" when you started to work it,pulling 6-16 plows or 20' disc in 5th gear.

Could be hot particles of carbon glowing from combustion, and coming out the exhaust pipe.

Are 4020 would build up with carbon and shoot sparks out the exhaust. 2 years in a row baleing hay we caught are fields on fire burned up 10 or more acres

Watch Diesel electric trains - they idle all day & when throttled up throw sparks & if dry start fires in the switching yards. Workers run around with fire extinguishers keeping up with movements
