If you want it to live and to still run water/ 4.155 bore with 5.750 stroke. Any bigger, you have to go to church twice on Sunday. I've heard 4.200 X 6 with hard block. Never saw the motor run.
Good Luck!

I am not for sure about the sleeved engine blocks,, but on the sleeveless 6 cyl IH, the block can be bored out to 4-1/8 very easily and still have 150 wall thickness. I bought a 403 engine a week or so ago, and had a piston break the sleeve, (block) so I finished breaking it with a hammer to see how thick the wall was, it measured .475 thick. Nice meaty block in my opinion. Would make an indestructable 301 at 3-13/16+ .060 in my opinion. you find these sleeveless blocks in IH 403 combines. They are everywhere. they are 263 to start with, I hve one in a H tractor,, bone stock, on reg gas was 70+hp. Hope this helps,, Chad

what is the difference between the 560,the 460, and the 301 combine engine? and how far can you bore out and stroke each for max. power

460 had a 221, 3-9/16X3-3/4 stroke. 560 had a 4.25 stroke, and the 301 has a 3-13/16 bore and 4-25/64 stroke, Have heard of 400 inch 6 cyl engine, I would use a 403 combine block, has a sleeveless block and thicker walled sleeves than the wet sleeve 301 (806 etc) Not for sure how much stroke you can stuff in there, Look for a old Ih truck head off off the 301 truck engine, they were a bit stronger than the tractor engines. Might make a decent 100 hp easy out of a 301, or bigger piston, stock stroke, 460-560 puller engine. Just my opinion, chadS
