Hello,

I'm going to be rebuilding my 1946 Ford 2N this summer and I want to make it a bit of a puller.

What can I do to the ol' thing to get 30+HP from it. Stock is something like 24-25HP.

Any one know of a supplier of high performance pistons, or manifolds?

I am thinking of having a tube intake and exhaust manifold made and installing a larger carb-although I don't know what one or type.

Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

Not trying to be a wise acre but as expensive as the small Fords are in the Nebraska suburbs we can not afford to turn one into a puller, are they that common in your area? Also when you build one how comparable is it to building the old flat head V8s,I think it would be a real hoot to build one!!

I have a friend that has one of those with the flatheads it it,,, he has 2 or 3 carbs on it,, It is just a play toy,, seen it pull once,, done well, smoked those little tires on there!!! Fords are cool!! I think they could be very underestimated,, especially with the Funks 6 cyl conversion. I think that is right, 6 cyl and v8's right? Chad

I've been thinkin the same thing. I know that breathing is a big deal on that engine, just pulling off the air cleaner makes a difference.I have ben looking for a high speed /pressure 12 volt blower to try. The tube manifold would have to be a good start. I would'nt mess around with running no sleeves. A custom cam shop could grind your cam to run right. That engine will turn the same rpm's as a flathead V8 ,4000 should'nt hurt it if the bottom end is tight. I read about an 8N with the flathead that'd do 65 mph, that'd have to be a hummin motor at that speed.

I meant Bill...sorry, also don't forget to get that draw bar up as high as they'll let ya...sometimes the tech guys don't figure a "lowly N" will do much so they tend to over look that extra 1 or 2 inches of drawbar height. Pete

Mike, I looked into this when we rebilt ours, you're on the right track...breathing is the issue, bigger pistons, shaved head and such don't make a BIG difference. Guys have modified the intake and used bigger carbs, but I pull NATPA and that would kick it up into a higher modified division and I didn't want that for 2 reasons, 1; I like my tractors near stock, 2; those tractors that you are trying to compete with are more easily modified with better results, so they get even stronger. We have had good luck in Div 1 with ours at #3000 and to some extent #3500. At #2500 she'll beat the Farmall A's and such, but if you get it that light it's tough to weight it up enough to play in the higher classes. We pick our spots; slick tracks, are the best on ours, harder tracks, and the Farmall C and SC, and Olie Super 66s are just too much. As far as the up/down tranny, we didn't feel that low 1st was all that much of an advantage as you never get any momentum built up. Have Fun! Pete

I was told the guys in my club run no sleeves and use Ford flat head V-8 pistons.

Bill from what i've seen they are geared to high and it would be more of a hassle than what it's worth.

First you need a step-down transmission or shorter tires to slow your ground speed. Bore it out, plane the head, give it a little stroke, rejet the carb, port the head & exhaust, new springs & valves, go to a bigger exhaust and add a free flowing air cleaner. This will give you more than what your looking for and won't break the bank. Worked for me! Of all the above, slowing the ground speed while maintaining RPMS is the most important part of Ford pulling.

The 2 companies that supplied the Over/Under trans for the Fords were Sherman & Hupp. Sherman had the lever on the left, Hupp was on the right. Both provided 12 gears forward & 3 reverses. The 24 HP might be enough in Underdrive-first.
