I am considering the purchase of an IH 660 diesel. Supposedly it has a recently overhauled shortblock from a 656 diesel. Is this possible? It may have a stuck valve, which is not a problem to me. I have heard that they are fairly rare, does anyone know of production numbers? How much horsepower do these have? Any ball park figures on what it is worth? Other things I would like to know about are reliability, availability of parts, etc. Anything I should watch out for?

All opinions welcome/appreciated.

Thanks
Steven

The IH 660D Has 78.8 beltHp.They were made between 1959 and 1963.There were 6995 produced between those years. The engine is a D-282 which was also used in the 560 and 656 and some of the 706`s. Parts are available at your local Case IH dealer.

We had one for a long time. It's main job was to pull a 7 yard Johnson Paddle Earth mover. Did it pretty well. We had a hired man that was super rough on it and the engine held up fine, though my dad says they like to crack heads (I don't remember it happening). Finally after a couple of months my dad noticed the guy was using about 50 gallons of hyd. fluid a week and investigated and found that the hired man had tied a rag around a major hyd. hose leak. A little while later the final drive planetary on one side took a crap. We got an 806 and turned the engine of the 660 into a pump motor to pump water back to the top of the hill out of a sump. Built a trailer for it ran a 6" in, 4" our pump over about 80' elevatin gain and 1/2 mile. That actually made that puppy smoke like crazy. an it for a few years, then we traded the irrigated farm land for some dryland wheat ground...much easier to work. Seemed like a good tractor to me.
