Where can I get info on swapping in an 8v71 or larger in a 5020? Kinze doesn't make kits anymore for these old sleds. Anybody got a kit that's used or blueprints to make a kit? Also, what is the differences between a regular 5020 and an Industrial 5020? Are the bell housings the same?

There were quite a few 5020's repowered around here , 318 Detroits , Cummins 903,s and M&W used to make a kit to use a Cat 3208 , and Cummins had a kit to put a 903 in a 5020 and 7520 . A fellow , now passed on , did a lot of them north of here about 35mi. South of here about 60mi a lots of Detroits were used . I knew a couple of those guys , and I would almost bet that the 4020 pictures 1206SWMO has are some of them . I have the original literature that Kinze put out showing the 6V71 and 8V71 kits for the Deeres . I don't have the equipment and know how to put it on here , otherwise I sure would do it . I remember going to the M&W shows and watching the pulls . M&W headquarters is about 90-100 miles se of here . Never went to the shows in Mo but went to most of them here . The show was west of here too , I think around Annawan-Atkinson area if my memory didn't fail me . I think the first one I went to was around '60-61 is that possible ?

Reed, In case you didnt see it heres a picture I had on here a few weeks ago.Its a 318 Detroit powered 4020 JD pulling the 15,000 Open class at the 1969 M&W Pull. There were two more similar 4020's there.

I have heard that (300) Kinze Detroit JD conversions were built.Theres a 5020 JD not to far from me with a 318.Its still in use.I'd love to own one some day.

I remember seeing 4020 with V-8 Jimmy at M&W Power Show. I would like to see the photo you are talking about. Can you send it through e-mail?

You got a pic of that? That's the kind of swap I've been thinking about. I want to build my own though. I have access to a cheap 5020I that is without motor. I also have access to a few Cats, Detroits, and Cummins motor via my uncles heavy equipment parts business. I just need to know how to mount one of those to the 5020 bellhousing and to find out what else has to be done (ie:hydraulic pump mounting, motor mounts, etc.)

I've read a little about the Kinze repowers, and I think they put something like a 1-inch plate between the rear of the engine and the front of the clutch housing, with the clutch housing bolts running forward and threading into it, and the engine bolts running rearward and threading into it. Have you contacted Kinze? I know you mentioned that they don't make the kits anymore, but maybe they could provide you with plans. The hyraulic pump shouldn't be a huge deal to pull off, because regardless of what engine is used, the crankshaft will be on the same centerline as the original. From there it would just be a matter of building a coupler.

Reed, All 5010, 5020 and 6030 bell housing patterns are the same. If you are interested in a 5020 with a V6 Detroit I have a friend that has one for sale. Send me an email if you are. Dave W.
