Wanting to Pull

Recently purchased an early model 4520 John Deere, and want to Tractorpull with it. I have been pulling John Deere 2 cylinders for years, but have alot to learn about the 6 cylinder diesels. What specifically, can I do with the stock setup to make the most horsepower out of what the tractor already has. How do I turn up the pump for (what is the smoke screw?) the maximum horsepower, and are there any internal modifications that can be made to the pump to get extra horsepower. Want to use stock parts this year, then next year do some parts upgrades. Any information would be appreciated!

First off, which pump do you have, the CBC series, or the DB pump, if you have the CBC, you will have to switch to the DB if you want to get any fuel flow.

Unfortunately I have the early model 4520 with the pump mounted on the left rear. Is it possible to do a swap to the late model 4520/4620, and if so what would be involved?

i don't know what is involved but you can swap a 466 in there.

Some of those 4520's got the 4620 engines.. Which had the injection pump mounted to the front cover... If you have the pump mounted there.. U have endless choices of injection pumps... JDGnut

My thoughts, I would hunt a 466 out of a 4455 or something similar. Two reasons, you get a crank driven oil pump, and you get easy cubes to start with.
