Hey guys, I would like some honest advice from you. I am looking at a 1993 ford F350 it has the 7.3 turbo diesel in it, not the powerstroke, are these engines very good? I have heard they were prone to sleeve failure from electrolosis. The truck has 166,000 miles on it, how much life do you think it has left in it?? Right now I have a Dodge 3/4 ton with a V10 that I love, but it's a regular cab, and I will soon have a bigger family, gonna need more space for pit crew!!! The truck is a crew cab, 4X4, with a 5 speed, they're asking 7900.00 for it. I would like to hear some honest advice from you guys, thanks for any help!!

I have drove 7.3 engines for former employer over 600,000 miles. They will get fair mileage, 14mpg average in our application of gross weight of about 14,000 lbs. and will last a very long time with proper maintainance 300-400,000 miles but will always leave you hankering for something more. They are a little anemic even with add on or factory 93, 94 turbo and if you attempt to carry gross weight of 20,000 lbs. or more you had better pick flat route. Will not hold a candle to 5.9 cummins in any category.

I've had a 1990 with the mechanically injected 7.3 and ATS turbo for years. Absolutely love the truck (crew cab F350) but did lose the drivers side back to cavitation at 170k miles. Went with a new crate/dyno motor from Expert Diesel Reman in Michigan. There's a lot of data out there on the 7.3 if you search. But, you can be confident that there's a significant amount of support as well. Hope this helps. Good luck.

My dad had a 93 F250 with the same engine. He put 297000 on it and sold it to a friend 5 years ago. He still drives it several days a week. I don't think that they have the power of the newer Powerstroke but I would say it is very dependable.

The last of the 7.3's before the Stroke were good motors. If the owners would have kept good antifreeze in them and use distilled water (city water is VERY bad for cooling systems) and a bottle of anti-corrossion stuff then you shouldn't have a problem. If it does leak it is normally number 7 and 8 cylinders and sleeves will solve the problem. Sometimes block seal will solve the problem but certainly not permanently. If you do have to sleeve it, you can add some serious money to the project. Unless you do all the labor of removing the engine it really adds up to take it to a shop for 2 $80 bore and sleeve jobs. If I had my choice between the 93 and the 94 I would go with the 93. They are much simpler. Mechanical pump that isnt expensive, simple injectors, glow plugs not hiding under the valve cover and very reliable. Alot of those motors out there with 300,000 on them with only an injector pump rebuild. You will need to run a fuel addative or some ATF in the fuel all along to keep the pump happy. With a little money that 7.3 will make just as much power as the 99-up Strokes. For less than $12,000 you could have a truck with as much power as a 2004 for $35,000 less money. That will buy the pit crew alot meals even at Outback.

We have one. ford 450 7.3 turbo. Had good power and pulled really good, we worked it really hard pulling grain trailers. Electrolisis got it at 68,000 miles pulled the engine and never got it back in. thinking about getting a mounting kit and putting a cummins in it this go around.

My opinion: Very good engine, we have one (1993 F-350 w/ 7.3 non-turbo) with 208,000 on it and have only replaced expected parts such as glow plugs, relay... I would rather have a 7.3 than a 7.3 powerstroke, because they are a lot more simple and there is less to go wrong.

They're good motors, definitely much simpler than a Power Stroke. They're detuned so they wouldn't out power the Power Strokes that were coming out in the next couple of years. I think they only put out around 4 lbs. of turbo boost compared to a Power Stroke in the 20s.

Direct injection is the way to go, no precombustion chamber like the old 7.3's. Powerstrokes have problems with valve cover gaskets which happens to be where they run their glow plug and injector harness through, not a very good idea if you ask me. I am a cummins man myself.
