I have never pulled at a pull that they rate the tractors by PTO hp... I have ran a dyno many times, but how do they run the dyno at the pulls. Do they pull the tractor down to its Rated rpms (usually about 540 at the pto) or do they pull it down until they about kill the tractor??? Just wanting to know... Thanks..

It is a common misconception that an engine is building maximum HP at some slow speed lower than rated RPM. Maximum torque? Maybe, depending on the cam. People who don't know how to read (and interpret) the gauges on a dyno think that a dyno operator can effect the horsepower produced by how he loads the tractor. This is untrue. What he can do is read the horsepower produced at some RPM that is more or less than optimum. The newer dynos read out directly in horsepower produced which makes it very easy to get maximum HP, you just load the motor until The rpm starts to fall off. In all cases, horsepower will start falling very quickly after RPM starts dropping. Seen a lot of jerk weed dyno operators at pulls. I would suggest a baseball bat be in hand when the guy starts to load your tractor. Right Burns?

You know what? It seems that those very same jerk weed operators are some way associated with making the rules for the club or pull.

There are a few DYNO class pulls around here in north central Il , used to pe a lot more . The classes we pull are 12-15,000 . 12 is 120 hp , 15 is 165 hp. They pull you down to factory rated RPM which on my 4430 would be 1000 pto at 2200 eng rpm for example . You have to start at no lower than factory hi idle speed which is around 2450 on the 4430 . some places let you run 10 to 15% above factory hi idle speed but still pull you down to rated rpm . I also run a 4020D in the 12,000 class . They also limit the 12,000 class to tractors less than 111hp factory rated , that's to keep 4430's , 1066's etc. from pulling with 4020's , 806's and so on . When there were a lot of these classes they used to impound the top five tractors at end of track and recheck them at end of class to see if anyone cheated and some did ! That's why they quit the classes I think because it was too hard to keep every one honest. I used to be in charge of local county fair pull , we had two dyno classes and it was a lot of work to get them all set right , someone was always arguing about something . This is for the newer tractors , when they had classes for the older ones same rules applied .They prefer to check at 1000 rpm if at all possible . Thats about all I can tell you about it except I didn't go into some of the ways people haved tried to cheat . JIM
