What caused severe head and some piston erosion in my IH DT361. One cylinder, injector burn marks are different and wet exhaust port. Can it be repaired? would include reworking seat area. Or is it new head time? Anybody got a good one?

The damage doesn't look like heat caused it. Most of it is on the head. I considered gasket leak during winter parking, but 361 gaskets are not normally sneaky. You see it in radiator, smell in exhaust,or they hydro-lock when cranking. I was leaning toward an injector dumping instead of spraying. Will tag that injector for closer insection at shop. Found a head ready to run, machined, fluxed ect. from a good source for about 400 more than I figured to rework. Just want to prevent it again, although has been 20 yrs.

Look for a crack or a blown head gasket. The water/antifreeze will eat the head and piston up while running. It should look like a bunch of big pits.

I do not know about in a diesel, but in a gas engine, if it running out of time or too lean it can cause pistons to burn.
