Hey guys, we just put a Dennys header on a 400, has anyone used these? Is there any trick to tuning the motor?? It just seems like it wants to run rough. After it warms up it isn't to bad, but it still just doesn't seem quite right. I've been trying timing and fuel adjustments, but it just doesn't change really. Thanks for the opinions and advice in advance!!!

I don't see any why the exhaust would cause a vacuum problem (but I have never seen a Denny's header either) unless it does hinder getting the intake mounted properly.

If the rough running is caused by the exhaust then back off the exhaust valve lash another .005"
which will close the exhaust several degrees sooner to prevent over scaveging.

It is a intake/exhaust combo manifold. The header is great in my opinion, it is the intake that has problems. I would say it is a bit overkill for a stock engine. Would be perfect for a big cube engine. It has more flow than a LP manifold. I had a problem with one for a friend's tractor, I could not get an accurate plug color in #1 and #4. I swapped out venturis, (smaller) and it helped woth the idling problems, but not much. Chad

That makes sense, the large runner lets the fuel fall out and run liquid thru the cyl.

Exactly! Way too much flow for a low compression engine. It creates a rich condition at full throttle, and erratic idling. If it had more compression, it would equal it out some. ChadS

Are you sure everything is sealed? Manifold to head & carb to manifold. It sounds like it may be sucking air, then when it heats up the gap closes. Just one thought.

If the engine is stock, and has less that 170psi of compression, you will not see any bennefit from it. It flows too much air for the amount of vaccum the engine produces. It drops the pressure so much, that it will only work in a high rpm situation. If you do anything use a small venturi to compensate for the vacuum drop. The problem you are describing is from not enough vacuum to run the idle circuit right. Like wild horses said, make sure it is sealed up, but if it does not affect the engine, this is what is happening. Hope this helps, ChadS

Yeah Chad, what you are describing is kind of what we were thinking was going on. It is a pretty well stock motor. The kid who owns it bought it to pull, and the manifold was cracked, he said down the road he wants to build the motor bigger, so figured as long as he had to replace the manifold, pick up some parts that he will need sooner or later anyway. Once the hammer gets dropped it runs pretty well. The throttle response is a LOT better than before. We've been testing it hooked to the loader tractor, when she gets working it does hum pretty well, runs out straight. I think we are however going to put header wrap on to try to keep the heat in the head a little better, it wants to run a little cooler than I would like to see, but hey, this is pulling R&D, RIGHT!!

You might have another problem in div 2-3 headers are illegal,so you would have to run your stock motor in div. 4

Nope, don't have to worry about what division, we don't pull with natpa or usap, just brush pulling in Mn and WI, running around 3000 rpms.
