The lowest octane you can burn is without knock is the correct answer. The lower the octane the slower the burn and the longer the burn pushes on the piston. High octane fuel in a low compression engine hurts your power. Unless you have over 8:1 or bores over 6" with 8:1 you should be able to run 4 month old 87 octane without knock. If it is a 6:1 or less motor it will burn most anything if hot and make more power on as sorry a fuel as you can get.

I have a Farmall H and my Uncle runs a Farmall M and we both started using JP Racing Fuels. We use the (CT) which was created for high RPM's in lower compression engines. When we dynoed the tractors after using the fuel it added nearly 5 hp in each of the tractors.

High octane fuels have a slow burn rate! Therefore on low compression engines use a lower octane rateing. We could go into a full explination but that would take volumes. Remember the KISS rule. keep it simple stupid.
