I wasn't planning to get into pulling, however I recently purchased what I was told was a '53 MH 33. I'm new to the brand, so I showed it to a Massey guy and he said it was a 33 with a 44 Special engine. It also has 20.4 inch cut tires. I was originally planning on selling the wheels, but keeping the tractor. Now I'm thinking of pulling it next summer. What class would the tractor pull in? Would it be considered modified even though a 33 and 44 special use the same frame?

Thanks for any help, Mark (IA).

Mark -

Unfortunately, the 33 chassis isn't any lighter than the 44 chassis! The previous owner, who performed that mod, probably had his 33 engine go bad and decided to "power up" with a more common 44 engine.

You could easily get into the 4500 lb class with removal of all of the "field dress". If you really go nuts with removing fenders, running small tires (14.9X38's), etc, you might be able to get it into 4000lb.

The 44 Special engine (most commonly the H277 Continental) is certainly capable. It can be built from 70+ HP(with stock cubes) up to 200+ HP (large cubes and massive head work) depending on how much money you would like to put in it! Email me with more detail as to the power level you desire and I can give you an idea of what you will need to do and provide you with needed parts.
