Get a 273 Buda block out of a 50 as its 3-3/4 bore stock. 262 Allis head, intake , and carb. If you use the crank from the 262 you will have to mill the top of the pistons.

Those 50 blocks are darn hard to find. I mean real hard. A D-19 block will bolt in...you have to put the flywheel and back plate off of a 40 or 50 on it and make a front motor mount. Nothing but a set of propane pistons in a D-19 motor will give it 90 horsepower.

At the 40's factory rated rpms? I know a guy with a 50 who did the D-19 crank and 3-13/16 bore and stock head and intake has 80 hp at stock rpms.

yeah, I know several who have gone the D-19 crank in a 40 or 50 and usually get in the 80-85 hp range. the D-19 motor was around 71-72 horse from the factory at 170 psi compression on gas. Propane pistons (just a lower wrist pin to push it higher) got it up to 210 psi. A fellow puller built his gas like that with some head work and it hit 95 hp at 20% over rpms.

You get that much more out of the D-19 head and intake? I would think the extra bore (with the stroke of a D-19)of a 273 would make more hp than just upping the compression. What is the rpm difference between the 50 and the D-19?

How bout this....D-19 crank, combine intake/exaust manifold (more air, less back pressure) chevy 427 valves, deck the head, msd ignition, 115 octane fuel, largest carb that will fit intake, and tighten govenor spring or remove completey, you'll turn about 3000rpms just with tightening the govenor spring, all that will give you about 100hp on a 40! and cost about 2500$ Mine dynoed out at 97hp waiting for the first pull to put her to the test!!

I have a cockshutt 40 i have been pulling now for 15 years.I have shaved the head .015 and minor carb wor and a .125 overbore kit in it so it has the same pistons as a d-19 allis. It's a gasser and will put 56 horse out at stock 1650 rpms but i will run mine at 4500 to 5000 were i can.

There is a pair of cockshutt's here in MN that turn some pretty insane rpm's. They pull open classes and do very well whenever I've seen them pull.

They have BUDA engines in them right? the same as the 6 cyl AC tractors and combines? Our club had a 50 that he says was 90hp with little work to it. all that power, and such a slow low gear, would make a killer heavy puller! Chad

I think they are Buda or Hercules depending on the model or year.
