I Have a 560 IH puller that keeps melting down the bearing on the front end of the pinion shaft....It has done this twice now, the last time I put a brand new bearing in and replaced all the gears that got wrecked when the old bearing went out...made one pass down the track and it did the very same thing again!! Has anyone ever had this problem? It is really blowing my mind as I cannot see anything that is wrong anywhere in the tranny...what am I overlooking? Any help would be greatly appreciated as I almost have all the bolts worn out on this tractor from taking it apart so many times!

If you're talking about the input shaft pilot bearing or "pocket" bearing between the input and mainshaft, be sure to use the OE straight roller bearing from CaseIH. I tried using a regular ball bearing and it didn't last. Make sure you get all the "chunks" out of the case too.

You are breaking the front bearing in the top pinion shaft? did you replace the shaft when you replaced the bearing? Either look for for a bent shaft, a cracked transmission housing. Also, you may have the bearing tolerance too tight on the pinion shaft. I blown up an H rear end years back,,, that bent the shaft, did the same thing you described, found the shaft was bent, and the housing was cracked. after replacing all of the parts, it is all good now for 6 years now. If you have a high HP engine in it, and have alot of wheel speed, you could be kicking the wheels back and forth during the pull, and back feeding the imput shafts when the tractor distributes power to the bull gears, and the wheels float back and forth (one wheel spin outs) the power switches from side to side, and preloads the bearings. Seen this happen a few times, even with stock tractors. Hope this helps some, Chad

Thanks for the info...I did replace the pinion shaft when it happened last time, the only thing I am wondering about is when I put the new bearing on the pinion shaft...it fit really tight...I had to drive it on the shaft, but after it was on, it seemed to turn freely. I really don't know if this would cause a problem or not. The pinion shaft is still straight, and there are no cracks in the housing. This would be so much easier if it was an obvious problem...been doing alot of head scratching on this one.....

You are better off not driving a bearing onto a shaft. Heat the bearing (gently in an over or on a bearing heater) and freeze the shaft. Your problem may or may not be related to the installation method but it probably did not help.

Good Luck,
A.P.

I think I found the problem....we put a steel flywheel and a double disc clutch set-up in this tracor and our input shaft ended up being about 1/16" too long and it was binding...don't know why I didn't notice it before! I am going to mill about 3/32" off of the shaft it connects to and see if that cures the problem....thanks for all the info guys!!
