I was thinking of taken my 14.9 by 38 off and putting on 15.5 by 38 to try and get some more power. The 14.9 tires work good but i think by doing this it will be like having half of gear. I/m thinking with the change in tires when i'm in 2 gear it will be like 1 an ahalf gear? What do you guys think. Thanks Will

Sidewall height varies from one brand to another
and doesn't necessarily vary the same.Measure the
circumfrance [sp?] of each tire then divide one
by the other, this will give you the percentage of
change of one to another.

15.5's are 4-5 inches shorter than 14.9's. This will reduce ground speed 6-8% in each gear.

Will,
I dunno 'bout that.

The 15.5's are taller than the 14.9's They would produce a little more surface speed at any given rpm over the 14.9's. Instead of slowing down, you might be going faster. And it may not be anywhere near 1/2 a gear either.

imho

A set of Firestone 14.9x38's on 14" rims vs 15.5x38's on 14" rims. The 14.9's are 3% faster with 6% more surface contact area.

I think i'll leave the 14.9s on if i'm going to have more contact on the track with them. I guy can never have enough traction. Thanks for the info guys. Will

Before mounting new 15.5x38 Firestone F&R on our Farmall 400, I stood them beside my used 14.9x38 Armstrongs mounted on my JD G. I would guess that there is minimal wear on my 14.9's. Both are mounted on 14" rims and both have the same amount of air. The crown of the 15.5's was definitely higher than the 14.9's but the meat of the tires were fairly equal. Granted I have one set on a tractor and the other just sitting there and I have two different brands. Far from a scientific method of measuring.

15.5's are wider, but definitely shorter. They will slow down your wheel speed.

ok..I learnt sumpthin'.

Thanks. :)

To be honest my 15.5's looked to be about the same height as my 14.5's. I just took it for granted that perhaps they were mounted on different width wheels and that made the difference.
