I hear talk about using D-17 pistons in a WC engine just wondering what is the differance between the 4 1/8 WC pistons and the 4 1/8 D-17 pistons? And are the dished or flat top pistons better?

The crater pistons in a WD45 and D17 are different. The D17 has the same 4.5 stroke but more compression because the wrist pin is set lower in the pistion. Kraig

Put D-17 Carb., air-breather and manifold on your WC. You will see a really big difference. I did!

If you want more compression and hp run a WD/WC piston on a 45 crank. This is the same setup as for a propane burner. It works. Hope this helps.

Run those D-17 pistons with a WD-45 crank - 4 1/2" stroke.

I am runing a WD45 crank with 4 1/8 dished pistons. was told that the dished pistons would create more power, the tractor pulls very well just wondering if D17 pistons had some special advantage, maybe a little taller or crater toped?

The piston has to make up the combustion chamber since there isn't any in a Allis-Chalmers gas cylinder head. A-C engineers proved the when they were looking for a replacement for the WD tractor.
They took a WC/WD block and stroked it to 5.00 inches (251cu in) using a flat top piston this engine only yeilded 40hp. The intake and exhaust flows are disruppeted at the top of the stoke. There isn't anything funneling the airflow towards the valves. The power crater pistons funneled the air flow towards the valves and was able to achieve the design goal of 45hp with only a 4.50" stroke (226cu in). Never use the d-17 pistons with a WC/WD 4.00" stroke or you will end up with only a 5.0:1 or less compression ratio.
