Chad I installed the lp head on the 450, and done a cold compression check. 180-200psi cold.
I then pulled it on the dyno with the timing set to 25deg advanced, she started pinging pretty hard at 1000 to 1100 rpm, 89oct ethanol. My question for you is if I back the timing up to avoid the ping or respring the dist. so that I only get say 15deg total advance am I robbing peter to pay paul, or should I get a thicker head gasket to lower the compression and keep timing at 25deg. What's your opinion?

You could use a lower gear while doing field work on 89... Maybe work on the advance curve... If it is really 8.5-9.0...you should be able to tune it for use on 89... If it is 10 or more, no.. Sounds like the thicker head gasket may be what you will end up going with.... Try 20* advance, and see if you are ok..

I agree with what the others have said, 89 is not enough, remeber I told you about the fine line of cyl pressure for running a higher octane fuel? 200psi is the breaking point, The timing, you set it, while the dyno is at 540, and watch the guage to find the peak HP reading. tighten it down, BUT, with low octane fuel it will preignite. Octane controls the pinging, go up to 93 and see if it stops. What do the plugs look like? black in color? brown? if it is black, and you are getting enough fuel, AND using 89, you need a better grade of fuel. right now, you are utilizing the most potential that the 89 octane fuel will give you. Jump up to 93 or higher. Hope this helps, ChadS

Chad I did try Cam 2, and it doesn't ping on it. The plugs after running on cam 2 are a rust color, I did not look at them on the 89. What was your thinking on a thicker head gasket? I'm running a stock gasket now that's .081 thick,I'm guessing I'm around 8.5 to 9.0 to 1 on the compression. Maybe I should back it down to 8.0 to one, what do you think?

Can you even GET a head gasket thick enough to take a full point or even a half point off of the compression ratio? Seems like that would take a mighty thick gasket, but I don't know much about Farmalls, either.

why don't you try better gas before you go "dumbing it down" try 91 or if available in your area sunoco ultra 94 might not ping then

Your right junkyard, But I'm trying to come up with a combination that I can run on pump gas. I also plow and use this tractor for other things. Thus I would rather not run high $$ fuel all the time. Thanks for your input.

does it ping under a load or just when pulled down? Will it be pulled down that much while plowing? If it only pings when pulled down and won't be pulled that hard plowing, just run it on the 89. It's only an issue if it tends to ping in general. When you hook it to a sled, run some of the good stuff in it.

Hey Dave,

It's probably gonna be tough to run that LP head on anything but good fuel with any timing at all. Even if you can run premium pump gas that's mighty expensive fuel for plowing and farm use. With that kind of compression 93-94 octane is probably only gonna be marginal at best.

Put the timing a 15 deg for plowing and 25 to 30 for pulling. Its going to take some good gas to keep a 450 lp head happy.

Hey a big thanks to all that gave input on this. As far as a thicker gasket, acording to the compression calculator I'm using, If I go to a .151 gasket the comp. should be just over 8to1 using this same calculator it shows that I'm at 8.78to1 now. As far as the ping it starts at about 1200-1300 rpm on the dyno, and that is about where it will run pulling the plow and even lower in the low ground when it pulls hard. I did use it to do some light work last weekend on the 89oct and had no pinging problems at all. Again thanks to all and I'll keep you posted!
