This weekend I am going to pull with my wide front jd 720 deisel. I am pulling a progressive sled for a short distance, I have never done this before and wonder what is the best gear to start in, its a 6 speed. I have had lots of advise but lots of different advise, what do you think?

Do you think that second gear would be good for a first try? I also think that 1st gear would spin with a lot of weight.

Jeremy,

We use 16.9 x 38 Traction Field & Road tires and usually pull in 8500, 9500 & sometimes 10500 classes. The tracks that we pull at are mostly loose so power is not the biggest issue. If you have a strong 720, you will not embarass yourself in 2nd gear even on a good clay track.

We have 2 720s and one would never handle 2nd gear until we fine tuned the fuel rack. Too much fuel is not good , but most can use a little more. Make sure that your air intake system is clean if you turn up the fuel. Most of all, just give it a try and have some fun.

I tried the 720 in 3rd on a clay power track. She lugged down fast at the last and I was slow pulling the clutch. She kicked back and ran backwards. I got to look like a dope with oil slobbering from the air intake from the oil bath aircleaner. Had to pull the stop, shut off the fuel. Crank with the starting engine until oil pressure returned then restarted. All this infront of a an audience. Depends on tire size and track. 1st or 2nd gear unless the transmission has the high speed 5th option. The local track here luggs down a stock 720/730 in the 10,000lb class in 1st gear.

A 720 diesel with the creeper gear setup should be able to handle 2nd gear with no problem. I have too much trouble spinning out in 1st gear. 10,000 lbs seems to be the point that 2nd gear becomes too much.

I've never had the gonads to try 3rd gear, but unless you have small tires and run @ 7500 lbs, I don't think you will have enough power. You just have to try everything and see what works for you.

I'd pull it in low gear , Ido pull A JD 60 and normally beat 720's who try second or third gears. just my thoughts
