I have found that by making your frontend as light as posible and getting your air pressure in the rear tires right will make for a good hook with an H. Also take the track conditions into effect. Good Luck.

Hitch height, hitch length, size of tires, air pressure in tires, cut or un-cut tires, track type, track conditions, even hook chain (from sled) length will all make big differances. Good luck.

I've been pulling stock tractors since 1980. Yup, the ones that cut, baled and hauled hay the day before the pull! A properly balanced tractor will tap the front wheels on/off the surface of the track as traction changes during the length of the pull. As soon as the front end rises off the track, the hitch height drops down, lessening traction due to the lost leverage from the lowered hitch height. The rear axle is the fulcrum, weights are moved (if possible), to the rear if the front end is heavy, or to the front if the front wheels come up off the track. (True story) My daughter hooked as test puller the first time she hooked our IH504 in a 4500# stock class. We had to strip the tractor of ALL weights to make the 4500# weight limit of that class. We set the hitch height at the maximum height allowed, 20 inches. The front end waved high into the air 60 feet down the track and I stopped her pull and dropped her to 3rd hook in the class. (test pullers are allowed a 2nd try if not exceeding 75 feet on their first attempt). I adjusted the turn buckles on our homemade drawbar to DROP the hitch 1 inch to 19 inches. The front end of the 504 stayed down much farther down the track and the extra traction gained from NOT DROPPING THE DRAWBAR DURING THE PULL got her down the track to 3rd place! That was 6 years ago, she's learned alot since! Don

On my div 1 Super H, with cast front wheels, full weight of the tractor is 3780 with 180 lb driver. the front tires on the scale weigh right at 1000 lbs. I have spoker rear wheels with 15.5 on it, it will carry the front end very well, never much over 5-8 inches, still using stock drawbar on it. does very well in my opinion. Only advice I can give is to weigh the front and the rear tires separatly, My opinion under 1000lbs front end weight is a good starting point for trying to find front end balance, Hope this make sence. Chad

The key to getting the front end up is to make the tires hook more than the motor can overcome. The front end rises as a result of the motor using the rear tires to leverage against the weight of the front. Your tires are slipping enough that the motor can get that leverage. Basically the motor is trying to turn the rear axle, if the tire is fixed so it can't turn, the frame has to turn, bringing the front end up. Does that make sense?

I agree with Joe... I had a similar problem with my JD G. I lengthened the drawbar out about 6" or so and the front end hovered very well. It's amazing how a slight adjustment in the draw bar will chagne things!
Good Luck! Matt
