I guess this is the banker in me instead of the farmer, but how often do you trade? Back in 2002 I was faced with the same issue whether to purchase a diesel or gas pickup. Coming from a Ford Family, it was a sin to say GM let alone own one; and after spending the majority of 1991 having my 1991 Dodge with the Cummins worked on, I knew a Dodge wasn't a consideration. Needless to say I was impressed by the ride and performance of both the powerstroke and duramax, but not the price. Did something I thought I would never do and bought a GMC with the 8.1 liter gas motor. Although it may not have as much as my buddies powerstroke with the Hypermax setup, it still runs good and cost a whole lot less. Every day driving it gets 11 to 12.50 miles per gallon 6.50 to 7 pulling. Considering the number of miles I drive per year, along with how frequently I trade, the gas was a better fit for me. Hard to believe you can buy a nice used Peterbilt or Kenworth for less then a pickup!

Here is a bit of info I thought I'd pass on. If you get a "wrecker package" in the GM truck, the Duramax has iron heads instead of the aluminum ones with alleged problems. I am a Chevy guy and rode in a Duramax. It was awesome. But so were all the rest. 7.3 Powerstroke is hard to beat and the new 6.0 has power but you have to rev it. I like Cummins best. It is hard to beat an inline motor's torque and a stick shift (avoid Dodge automatics!!!). No prejudice here. Since I am on a budget, I use a 1973 Ford F-250 with a New Process 4 speed and 390 V-8. Good mileage and torque. But I am a cheap a$$. My 2 cents this morning.

Don't buy the Dodge automatics, they are junk. Had several buddies with auto, and they fell apart, they went to Ford & chevy.

You mentioned you want used, buy a Ford 7.3, you can't go wrong with the 7.3!!

01 and 02 cheves now have 200,000 mi warranty on fuel systems or problems as a result of the fuel system, something to consider.

If you plan on pulling heavy loads on a regular basis you might consider an International truck (4700 or similar model). They have bigger engines, as well as many other things such as brakes and suspension better suited to pulling heavy loads for about the same price as a new pickup.

Hello,
My first choice would be a Cummins Dodge. they handle the best with a trailer.
My second would be the Ford powerstroke.
I'm a chevy guy too, but the diesels they make now days are garbage. the only diesel chev made that was good was the 6.2L . I've heard many horror stories of the heads on Duramaxes.

Good luck,
Russ

Right now, Chevy (or GMC), has the biggest engine...6.6L....the new Fords are 6.0, and the Cummins in the Dodge is a 5.9L...We have a '04 GMC Duramax, this is the first one we've had...and I love it...it'll run away from anything on the road. We have a 34' triple axle trailer that we haul about 18,000 lbs. on, plus the weight of the trailer, which is about 6800 lbs...and it handles it just fine...
Just my opinion...they're all good...I would suggest that if you're a Chevy man, stick with the Chevy, as you won't be too impressed with the ride of the Ford or the Dodge.

Apparently you have never rode in a Ford or a Dodge. Maybe you were not distracted by all the rattles and the console shaking around in the Ford or Dodge like a Chevy does so you had more time to concentrate on the quality of the interior and TRUCK ride. I have driven all three loaded. I wouldn't trade a Ford or a Dodge for 3 Chevys even if they paid the tag and insurance.

Hopefully the Duramax will turn out to be a good engine. It will still be a GM will all the cheap look and feel and squeaks and rattles though.

The Cummins has more than proven itself as a good motor and the new Dodge trucks are a far cry above anything Dodge has ever produces before. Hard to go wrong with a Dodge unless it is an automatic.

The 7.3 is tough motor. The new 6.0's have some issues. Shame Ford didn't put the new automatic behind the 7.3 and milk a few more years out of the best motor they have had. Rumor has it the 6 will be replaced by a larger version in the next year or two. This will orfan the 6.0. As much as I love my Ford, if I were buying a 2005 it would probably be a Dodge. I would actually try to find a 7.3 a year old.

I always have been chevy too, but if your gonna do some SERIOUS hauling in hills and such, a bigger engine is better. the ford is ok, but I would go with the hummin cummins in the dodge. for as small of a diesel engine the chevy has, its the best. the chevy is a 6.6 liter, the ford a 7.3, and I believe the cummins is a 7.9?? if your in flat area like I am, I would get the chevy. hope this helps a little.

Fords is 6.0L V8, Chevy is 6.6L V8, and the Dodge Cummins is 5.9L inline 6. CJ

I can help you here . I have a 2003 F-350 , 6.0 Litre power stroke . I do antique tractor pulling and pull a 25 Ft gooseneck . The Dealership says I can haul 12,500LBS with my truck . I went to an auction in New York 265 miles from home . I bought a John Deere 720 , and a John Deere 70 , both with loaded tires . My combined weight was 22,500 on the Gooseneck hitch . I came home by way of southern Vermont . That is a nice ride and has a 6.5 Mile grade at 12% up !! tHE SPEED LIMIT WAS 45, i DRAGGED THAT LOAD AT 55mph UP THE HIKLL AND NEVER MISSED A beat . That Ford is here to stay and does stuff that makes people wonder ! . I have never had a better riding and dependable truck than her . I aint gonna be at the dealership for a while . It has 325 HP stock , and I just got a Banks Six Gun module for her this weekend and bumped the HP up to 476. Its pretty nice to have that much sack in a pick up truck !!

Not a new truck man myself, but didn't think Ford still built the 7.3 or bought them from navistar. Also I thought the Dodge/Cummins inline 6 was much smaller then that. From what I have read the 1st year duramax was the only problem year and they now run them in the 5500 series truck so they must be pretty strong.

I am a chevy man, there is no doubt of dening it. I have 2 buddies that have a the Duramax engine in there 3/4 tons,& they semm to like it. Average 16 mpg on the highway, not sure when pulling a load. They are good trucks to me. the 6.6 liter has alot of power & the Allison trans is dependable to transfer that. If they put the Allison in road tractors, it should be very tough in a light duty truck.

The Ford is a good truck. In 04', the 6.0 liter was put in them, I can't say I hear any bad things said about them. Plenty of power is availble when you need it. Today, the Ford pickup is the truck to buy. Everyone praises the 6.0 & the auto behind it. Ford has always been known to have the strongest chassis out there. There has been rumor that in the future Ford will have a Catipiller engine in their trucks.

Dodge would be my preference if I were to get a Diesel truck, mainly for the inline 5.9 liter Cummins. It is my belief that you will have more torque with a inline engine than any V-8, why would they put more inlines in road tractors. If you were to go with an automatic, that would be the only down fall, but there is a 9-stage power "chip" that you can plug in that will give you up to 250 hp, but the transmission will not hold up. Dodge is a great truck, for now until there contract with Cummins expires in 2008 (Ford owns Cummins).

Between a Ford or a Chevy, I would stick to my roots & get a Chevy. Those trucks have been proven year after year to be free of defects & are easier to work on than a Ford. When Chevy came out with the Duramax, they had some problems with the heads. They have some problems today with the injectors, if one goes bad, they change them all out on the bad side, yet they will look at the other to make sure everything looks bad on the other. That my opinion on that.

I have to totally disagree with one thing. "Ford has always been known to have the strongest chassis out there". I ran a wrecker service for years and owned Ford and Dodge. A chevy frame and front is rock solid compaired to the older fords. If you want a real pile of crap get a twin I-Beam. Fords also break the frames just behind the steering box. Never broke a chevy frame. I have a 86 Ford F-350 with a 6.9 with Twin-IBeam and it's junk.

Actually Ford doesn't own Cummins. A few years ago it was said they owned 51% but that ended up being a rumor. They did own a small part of it but sold that several years ago.

I love it when people praise the "Allison" in the GM. IT IS NOT THE SAME TRANNY AS A SEMI ! ! It isn't even kin to the one in a school bus. Allison agreed to put their name on a Japanese tranny so GM could brag about having an Allison. Get under one an look at it. It is no where near the size of what is in a school bus. And they put baby Cummins in school busses with real Allisons. Got to love the whine in low gear and reverse though huh?

so chevy talked allison into putting their name on a jap tranny huh?that is a pretty good one i will have to admitt but i'm sorry i can't buy it.
the reason it is smaller is the frame would not allow the big one. if you think the school bus has a big one you should take a look at a semi allison, makes a school bus tranny look like a peanut.
