First check for trouble codes. I think on that year you can still jump the diagnostic connector to get the "check engine" light to flash out the codes. Or it may just be normal operation. GM programs the computer to cut back the power when the engine gets to a certain temperature, like 210 deg. or so. They reach this temp pretty quickly on a pull and you definitely feel a drop in power. These engines are basically a hand grenade with the pin pulled anyway so you don't want to trick the computer into letting it put out full power on a hard pull.

is it getting stuck open or something? cause the wastegate is supposed to open and let excess boost out so you won't overboost your motor. this lets the turbo build max boost at much lower rpms.

yes its open part way to let it out and keep some boost pressure but when u get it on a hard pull hauling a tractor up these hills around here it just kicks open and the rpms drop way down

Hello
My '98 6.5L with 45,000 Kilometers just had a problem last week. I took it in to the dealer and the computer was shot. He said the 6.5's have problems with the computer getting hot and burning out. After the computer was replaced and a Heat Sink was added, The dealer also said to leave the plastic cover off the top of the engine because it traps too much heat, resulting in a overheated computer.

Good luck,
Russ

Good luck,
Russ

You are referring to the PMD (pump mounted driver).

The actual powertrain management computer is in the cab, beside the glovebox.
