What tractors are competitors to the Deere 4020 back in the day? I am guessing:

IH 806
MM G900...G1000?
MF 1100...1130?
AC 190XT...D19 maybe?

Which ones did you fellas like to run? Before my time I'm afraid.

The Case 930 was a good match for most 4020s in heavy work. The Case 1030 would walk all over one in heavy field work. Either one would do the same work on a 1/3 less fuel. The IH 806 would run circles around the 4020 also on less fuel. None of these handled like the JD 4020 though. All good tractors.

No opinions, just facts from 30+ years farming and mechanicing, the 4020 is the BIG HORSE of the bunch. Not only that, the clutch, trans, and rear end will take over 300 horse.Try that with your 806 and you will be spending $$$$$$'s repairing your t/a,bull gears, brake pinion shafts. The planetary final drive setup is much stronger than just hanging a gear on the end of a shaft and running a smaller gear against it.Oh yea,our 71 4020 had 124 hp.with all seals intact on the pump, and the neighbors 1066 couldn't keep up with it in the field or beat it on the pulling track. He did go down the track faster with alot more smoke, just not as far.

the opinion around here, southwestern ohio, is that both were good tractors JD 4020 and IH806, but the 4020 was probobaly the best of all. in the years discussed we were still runnin orange ones, which were pretty good, but nothin compares to a 4020. have had one for about 12 years. Wouldnt let go of if for nothin.

Well, if you are talking about a specific year,, hard to beat the 4020 in the fields against say an 806,, the D-21 AC, 30 series Case tractors, oliver tractors are in there too, like the 1850-55, 1950-1955, then the big ollies, but if you look at the later years, maybe later 60's early 70's then the IH 1206, and the 56 model IH's were a commanding force VS a 4020,, My choice would be the 856DT. Dad, years back had a 4020 with the m&w turbo kit, then he got the 856,, the ol 856 bout plowed the 4020 under, with the same plow!! But that is field work,, Still the 856 is my choice,, we got a 856 with the 407DT, nice strong, reliable tractor, play, or work. Just my opinion,, yep, before my time too,, but have heard many of grandparents stories bout the old days,, but, history, and experience, still holds strong today... ChadS

I'm just getting a feel for the mid sixties 90-100 h.p. diesel non-turbo 6 cyl tractors. Guys tell me the 806 was a tough tractor for a 4020 to beat. I like those years. M-M G900 may be there although G1000 was first in 1963 or 64 I believe. There was a lot of model changing and turbulance in those years. Even rear end problems.

depends what you are doing with them,in heavy tillage the 806 will walk all over the 4020.
in planting the 4020 is a little more user friendly than the old 806 or so i have been told.

Redman hit it right on the nose, 806 better for heavy tillage, 4020 for planting a 856 will walk all over both tractors.

Oh yes, things break when you test the full power of these brutes. My dad, and my nephew just rebuilt the final drive in the 856, sheered the teeth off the brake pinion shafts. Some of the teeth on the bull gears got it too. 165 hp respectivly. Just for farm use,, "For now" it is cranked up a bit, mostly a new pump. We have a freind who has a 4320, just sitting around, runs an auger, some planter use too. Would be a good one to tune up. Big ol Deere!! That would give the 856 a run I think. ChadS

Oh, yeah! My uncle has a 4320 that dynos just over 130 hp at factory settings. This is with virtually no smoke. I think the 4320 was under-rated. If you ever spent any time on one, you would know what I mean. The difference between the 4020 and the 4320 is night and day. There aren't too many 4430s in stock trim that have anything on the 4320. They are heavy and strong. I would like to set the fuel up one time just to see what it would do.

He's talking about buying a 4255 so maybe the 4320 would make a good farm stock. Just imagine what you could do with a 4620, Chad! Same basic motor but alot more beef!
