Hi fellas. Here's a question for you. I've lined up several brands in the "mid-size" category of tractors from a similar time period. Which one would you prefer and why? Any additions?

Massey Harris 33
Minneapolis-Moline ZA
Oliver 77
John Deere B
International H
Allis-Chalmers WD
Case SC
Cockshutt 30
Ford Jubilee?

Depends entirely on your rules. If it's completely stock, that 30 Cockshutt has a really low gear and won't run out of power. If you're building for big horsepower, that 77 and WD would be hard to beat.

How about an IH 300? With that TA you can get by with less horsepower.

I would say the WD or the 77 hands down over the rest, for HP to $$$ ratio. They could all pull good though.

What are Division or classes are you aiming for? The Massey Harris 101Jr has been winning DivII 3250 & 3500 lbs in our parts. The MH 101 Sr. has been picking up wins on the DivII 4000 & 4500. A 1938 Case L has been doing very good, DivII farm stock or out of field classes, but that may be too heavy weight for what you are looking for. We pull a Super 88 Olie - we found out last week it doesn't like the gumbo track. But 3 wks ago, we beat the Case L on a firmer, but still sticky track in spots[enough for those dilly digs :~) that trap the best of 'em]. We have a MH101Jr available for a new owner, overhauled engine. :~) Dee

I'm after people's opinions on 30-40 hp tractors around 1950 in the 4000# weight range. Mid-size 2-3 plow machines.

M-M guy I am. I know the ZA comes up short compared to 77 potential. Just curious what people use. What? No good reviews on farmal H yet? There are tough ones beating 77s out there.

If you are looking for the best mid size puller you will not find it here. Everyone's tractor is the best and always will be. Go with what YOU like and make it work. I started out with a Farmall H and was told that it was a poor canidate. I proved them wrong, to the point that in my area most pullers in my class quit pulling. This is NOT what I wanted. The most power doesn't always win. Do your home work and have fun.

Funny, I heard the same thing about the H farmall too!! LOL!! Takes alot of time and effort to make the H run with a good AC, or oliver 77. stock, or modified. Do you still have your H? Chad

H's are good tractors for pullin, but, never enough!! LOL Been tossin around the idea of a M, last few months, nothin huge, a modest 125-130 hp, with longevity in mind. Will be an alcohol engine, Need to find more clubs who would support alky tractors. I always hear about the no see flames from alky,, I know from first hand how that is. If the pros support it,, why don the pros in antiques?? I bet money, that if alcohol was allowed, you would not see half the blown engines from over cubing these engines. Always a touchy subject on alcohol, and antiques. In our club, we have pullers mixing nitro in the fuels, propelyneoxide. well you get the picture,, To me, in the bright sunlight, sound more of a bomb to me, than alcohol. What do you think? I Always respect your opinion! ChadS

We pull a 77 in stock antique(like Div 2)classes (3500 up to 4500#) and are pretty happy with it, but we do get beat by a couple of H's and of all things a couple of Ford 900's. Someday I would like to build a bigger cube 77 but that will have to wait.
