I just put my head on my JD G and it is leaking water around the studs. I used the copper washers that came in the gasket kit and torqued the head to proper specs. Shoud I try to find the old style lead washers and use them? Any help would be greatly appreciated. I've got two pulls this weekend. Thanks.

JD part #264R available at your local Deere dealer for $.31 per washer list price. Also, make SURE you do a hot retorque of the head, with the engine at full operating temperature of 190-200 degrees, and also readjust valve lash at that time. Most two-cylinder head gasket sealing issues are due to not doing the hot retorque or warped deck surfaces.

Yes, I'm a Deere service tech at a large dealership in east-central Nebraska corn country. I generally specialize in row-crop tractors 150-hp and larger, but do get to play with two-cylinders in the shop from time to time in addition to owning a few of my own.

Well, I don't know about a thousand times as much as I know, or more, but I try to keep learning. The weather has been pretty cool this summer - coolest June for a long time. We've been getting some darn good rains - enough to keep a lot of the pivots sitting still. All in all we can't complain. There has been some real nasty weather in other parts of the state this spring, but fortunately we've missed all that garbage.

I would definitely get the lead washers, and use permatex on the threads!

we used to use them, but since we blow headgaskets often, we decided to use anti-seize on everything. in place of the washers, and on the treads on the back. haven't had no leaks, and haven't blowed the head gasket the last pull. maybe try that, or use solder, but it still ain't as good as the lead. the copper should have squished out....did it? is it leaking into the tappet pan or in the cylinders?
