One thing i wanted to say,, when I had a GJD in the shop tuning it up,, bone stock, but had a miss and popped badly through the carb, tunrned out to be the load adjustmen was way too rich, and for some reason,, when it leaned out, after readjustng it, pop went away,, I did think it was preigniting,, even changed octane, and went back to 92, Would this be accurate to say that there is something in the JD carbs that may cause this famous ping, or pop? a JD is sometimes harder to get right cause its 2 cly.. and the plug location and the efficiantcy is always not good for them to adjust...we have teh duel setup so u can dial in each cylinder..since there not always the same....

Ever worked wit the hemi style JD heads? Seen a A JD unstyled had the plugs in the top of the head,, Not in love with the side plug location, and they use short electrode plug as well, Does the hemi design head make a difference in the JD? ChadS

Just because the spark plug is in the top of the head doesnt make it a hemi. A true hemi has a HEMIsphereical combustion chamber, not a flat one or one w/ an eyebrow like a Deere. Good luck trying to get rocker arms and pushrods to work w/ a hemi-headed 2 cylinder. And then try to get the ports all come out the top and look halfway original. The plug in the head doesnt help much anyway, as I've dyno tested both and got the same HP w/ the plugs in the side as in the head.

I would guess that a cyl head like that would be for a large stroke engine, where the pistons may go past the plug hole, about the only advantage I can think of is that the plug is no longer so shrouded by the side of the piston. Course, I have not seen where they are located in the chamber after the conversion too,, Just thought that was kinda neat, Chad

These "octane" numbers quoted. Are they RON,MON or R+M/2 as pump gas is rated? If they are just RON numbers. We may as just purchase a barrel of toulene and blend our own mix with pump or aviation gas.

I am in Indiana, costs about $2.50 a gallon through our supplier. that is mixed. Let me ask,, how much compression does your engine have?? 4 or 6 cyl,, cubic inch irrelitive for figuring out octane amounts. 200psi and under, 94 octane will handle it,, 201-225psi, 100, 250 to 275, 103-108 octane, 275 to 300 and up, 110 to 115 octane. Octane,, you can get too much actually ,and cause preigntion again. It does not give you a clean burn in the cyl,, and all the contaminates left over from not using the excess causes carbon to build up, and it builds, and builds, then it breaks loose, and floats around in the cyl they are hot, and will preignite the cyl. it is like a bunch of sparks left over from the combustion. Ethanol,, it is a very very clean burning fuel, and Buickndeere is right,, you have to rejet it richer, and yes, it does cool off the carb and intake very nicely,, seen it frost up on a 90 degree day during warm up on my H. and that is at 50/50 of my fuel mixture. it is not pure ethanol I use either, it has gasoline already in it,, but it is like a 85-90% ethanol content. then I cut it back with 94 ultra. the mix I use depends on compression, high compression I run it 50/50,, for 200 psi and less, is more like a 75%gas, and 25% ethanol. Funny thing,, and yes We have had our fuel checked,, at the 50/50 mix, just under .750, but ileagal in the nationals,, just because ethanol is considered alcohol. Of course, ethanol is in everyday pump gas, so that throws pump gas 87-94 octane, ethanol blended. so be careful,, if you can run it, run it, you wont be disaponted for a low rpm engine. ChadS

its a JD A with a 6.125" bore and 7.25" stroke. all i know is it has enough to spark knock on 110....i've never tested it cause i have no compression tester.

Aviation 100LL is considered 100 lean and 130 rich like the old green 100/130 av gas was. What kind of engine do you have? Methyl alcohol has an octane rating of 108. The cooling effect upon vapourization helps to prevent detonation as well.

Hi, I run a test lab complete with octane engines.MTBE that is being phased out of gasoline is around 120 RON. Toluene is about 120 octane. Be careful of the octane ratings, specifically which octane number that is being reported. An octane consists of an avg. result derived from 2 seperate engines. These engines are the Motor Octane & the Research octane engine.Pump gasolines are run on both and the ratings are added together and divided by 2 to come up with a pump octane R+M/2. AVgasoline is run on the motor engine and the result is corrected from a chart to give a performance number octane. Racing fuels are run only on the Research engine. Also very few of the octane additives available out their actually work. For whatever it is worth.....

Watch the avgas it is not octane rated the same as gasoline! The rule of thumb for alchiol, it takes twice as much alchol as gasoline for the same hp. alchol burns cooler, suspends moisture, eats aluninum must be flushed from the system after use. SMELLS SUPER WHEN BURNING. Gasoline for washing parts, alchol for drinking, nitro for real HP
