ChadS---Fuel ?

ChadS, have a question on the blended fuels you have been using. Would like to know if this type of fuel could be used in demo derby cars to help control engine temps? The bigest killer in this type of racing (derby?) is after they loose coolant when the radiator gets busted out. Do you gain any benifits in less heat from this type of fuel? I ran methanol in a tractor pulling several years ago and know what it can do, from your posts I undestand you are useing an Ethonal blend. Where can I get it and what changes need to be made to the engine?

Thanks.

Chad, where in Indiana can I get some of the blended E-85 fuel? We are running at the Wayne County fair this week-end with a compact AMC Spirit. Tough little cars.....

The derby car I tinkered with a little just used the the heater core for cooling and ran the fan on high. The rad and main hoses were just for show. Put a plug inside the hose at the pump inlet and at the thermostat outlet. Coolant flow was through the engine, to the heater core, dumped into the rad overflow tank and the pump suction was from the overflow tank. Just took a couple of fittings and the hole saw. She boiled some but never ran dry of coolant. A rich mix of E-85 would run much cooler. If he rules don't already require it. Bypass the trans coolant lines right back into the trans and as short as possible. Can't move with the trans fluid leaked onto the ground. Screw nail them tires to the rims as well.

Trany lines, Cut and flare copper tubing run to back seat area. Have about 10 feet coiled inside a metal 5 gal can. Punch a drain hole in the bottom, ice before heat and before the feature. Cheap cooler, works well. Don't forget to cover can well. Heater core, just another hose to blow. Bypass heater complete. Get good high psi rad hose, double clamp, new or psi tested rad, marine thermostat (140 degrees) or drill holes in t-stat. Retard timing so it starts when very hot. Run headers, get rid of factory manifolds they hold too much heat. I ran coolinal in my coolant worked real good. If you have the engine apart have the coolant passages in the heads and block. Go Bashin!

They won't let us have anything "open" in the passenger compartment so the transcooler won't work around here. The engine seems to stay cool enough for the duration of a derby with just the heater core & fan. Using the coolant overflow tank to recieve cooler water from the heater core and as pump suction worked well enough. Backing the timing off a wee bit is a good idea for starting if she gets hot. The headers do run cooler but cost some extra bucks.

Never ran a demo but would love to put wife in powerpuff. If you took out thermostat would the engine run cooler or hotter. I got a lot to learn so when linda is pmsing she can take it out on somebody else.

runs much cooler, my truck that I drive every day was running too hot so my brother just took the thermostat out and it ran a bunch cooler. Mainly because there is nothing to slow the flow down. All the thermostat does is slow down the flow so your motor can build heat and get to normal operating temp.
hope this helps

Probubly hotter. It would flow to quick. Just pop the center out and put it back in.

Also buickndeere said E-85 would help keep engine cooler. How much will I have to open up jets to keep power. My S-10 and WD45 dont nearly have any power on E85. the truck loses 5 mpg and the tractor won''''t pull all that much better. so will the demo be alright ??

the E-5 will lose mileage but it costs less so it evens out. as far as how mush bigger I dont know. I have yet to try it, not done with my motor yet. Chads might have a better idea.

The cooler is covered in the back seat next to the boat gas tank. I used a 3/4 ready rod down through the floor. My cousin used to use the heater core on his old fords (60-64) but I never had much luck with it, new hoses or not. Headers I built myself, I got an electrition to sponsor my the 1-1/2 " electrical conduit. Not pretty but sounds good collected into a 4" truck stack. Mopar all the way, nothin beats an IMPERIAL!

There's no pressure on the hoses so they don't blow.

Its probably just my luck that I have no luck with them. Ether the core pops loose(leak) or hoses get melted or cut. Tried 3 times and said enough with it.

If the cooling system is sealed tight with no relief/rad cap the heater core/hoses will fail in minutes. That why we let the flow from the heater core run into the coolant storage tank which is "open to atmosphere". The water pump then draws from the coolant storage tank.

VP C-12 works great but is costly. I have not tried it but I am going to try E-85. Jet BIG!
Fuel cools on a derby car!
