Has anyone ever sat down & figured out how much fuel $$$ has to be saved to pay for the diesel option including sales tax & extra interest payments? Likely 95% of diesel sales are status symbols rather than being practical for the application. If you are getting cheap diesel by burning home heating fuel or farm diesel, then farm gas is avalable too.

Forgot to mention, the 7.3 Power Stroke is supposedly already out of production and warehouse motors are being installed in the new Fords. After this year the 7.3 will be gone and Ford will use a new 6.0 Liter diesel also made by Navistar. I believe it will also be called Power Stroke.

MAN... Who stays up all night dreaming up these rumors to start??.... Navistar's still building 7.3L PSD... They will still be used in vans for a year or two until the van can be redesigned... And the New 6.0L is a CAST IRON BLOCK & HEAD engine WITH CAMSHAFTS.... Early reports say about 335 to 350 HP and 550 Lb/Ft of torque but the RPM is higher to make the HP. The torque will be avail at low RPMs too. AND there is a 4.5L V-6 version of the engine coming out for use in Excursions and F-150's too. 225 HP and 400Lb/ft of torque. The V-6 was supposed to be released first but the last thing I heard was the V-8 will be avail. sometime during the 2003 model year and the V-6 sometime later...

It's been talked about on the ford-diesel.com forums for the last year or so.

The Ford and the Chevy may have a small advantage in power but the Cummins is tough to beat. They all have more power than you can use in a pickup chassis. I have a one ton 24 valve 4wd cab and chassis with a 5 speed and 3.54 gears, extra heavy springs and doubled frame rails that weighs 7300lbs. With the 25ft trailer and a backhoe on board I weigh in at just over 29,000 and it will go anywhere just as fast as you want to go. It has never gone under 11mpg, and is usually around 14. Unloaded the truck gets 19 consistently. If you study your engine design it should be an easy choice, you cannot build a V-8 as strong as a six if space limitations and weight are a consideration. How many big JD and IH tractors used V-8s? How did the IH V-8 tractor perform? How many new Kenworths are sold with IH or Isuzu engines? The Dodge dealers are a little arrogant because they know if you do not buy it the next guy will. Whatever you do, do not buy an auto trans model. And remember that 90% of Ford trucks are still on the road, the other 10% made it home!! Bill

As was suggested on another board that you posted on, but everyone passed over it, consider a true medium duty truck. I have had a low-profile C6500 Chevrolet now for about a year and a half. It has a 3126 Cat motor with 6 speed manual trans. It really does a good job pulling my 32 ft. gooseneck with 2 tractors and all my weights, etc. To local pulls I have hauled 3 tractors with it. It does awhole lot better job pulling and stopping than the 454 dually that I was using. Also the price wasn't that much more than a 1 ton. If you're not a GM fan, Ford has F650 and F750's. The big rig makers have trucks in this class, but they are more money. The spec sheets on all of them are a mile long concerning which horsepower engine, trans, rear end, brakes, etc. you can get.

Well said I have had a 4700 International for 3 years it replaced a Chevy gas. I was hauling tractors for repair shop averaging two loads a week 12000 to 20000lbs. The loads were slowly killing the chevy. The binder has only a DT360 turbo diesel and a 6plus trans but will out last any pickup haulimg similar load everything is bigger heavier and designed for it. The only thing i would change is going to a 466. But if you don't like IH Chevy, Ford, and Freightliner all make a good medium duty truck. Mine has 253000 miles on her and it still makes two trips a year from n.Y. to Wis. I would point her towards Califorina in a heart beat.

We've got an '84 GMC Brigadier that we use to haul our tractors with and it does great. It was a good truck when we bought it and even after an engine overhaul we've still got 1/4 the money in it that we would have had in a new truck. It's got a turboed 6-71 Detroit (270 horse, 783 lb. ft. torque) and pulls great. Only downside was having to learn to drive the 9-speed.

I have a 92 dodge with a cummins and love it. It pulls 18000 lbs just great. the mileage empty is consistantly 17-19. There are a lot of performance upgrades that are very reasonably priced. The automatic overdrive was the only weak link in the older ones. You should pull heavy loads in drive. There are some good buys on the older style dodges.

OK....Here's my 2-cents worth. My brother has a 99 Ford F-350 SD with a Powerstroke and a 6 speed. 50,000 miles and it hasn't been back to the dealer yet. My grandfather....being an avid chevrolet man, decided to get one of the new, big bragging rights Chevrolet Duramax Diesels. Well, he did, and similar results. He had it for about 1200 miles, then blam, cracked head. Warranty, took it back. New head.....Got it back....put another 700 miles on it, then Blam....cracked the other head....Hummm he said. Traded it straight up for a 2000 Superduty Ford Powerstroke. He hadn't ever used the Chevy to tow. Oh well, my dad has a 91 Dodge with a Cummins and a 5-speed. Never any problems, other than a sore back after ever trip. Man those old style dodges ride rough. In my opinion, go with a Ford or a Dodge. This is one of Chevy's big ideas...dazzle them with big horsepower numbers....and yes, when the truck works, it'll outpull anything out there, WHEN it is running. Go with the old proven heavyweights. Ford or Dodge...

Well if you go with the best it would not be a powersucker! I talked to a diesel performance guy and he told me that were he is from the guy who buys a ford trades it in every 2 years because it is wore out by then! They use their trucks hard and pull loads all the time and that kills the vblock in those fords! Now I have a 91 dodge with a cummings and it has 450000 on it with a auto tranny the only thing done to that truck was a fuel pump at 375000 and a tranny at 415000!!

Besides regular wear ant tear like brakes and things like that it has been real good to me. But remember if you go with a auto it all depends on how you take care of it with a stick your worries are less that is why my 2001 is a 6 speed and what a diference! I would recomend the 6 speed any day!No one will put updates in a auto for more power!

A Chev or GM with the Duramax engine is by far the best pick up. You're on crack if you think a Powerjoke or Cummins can even compete. We've got a 1 ton GM Duramax and 5 speed Alison automatic and it pulls our 22' flat bed, loaded, like nobodies business. It gets 23mpg empty and averaged 15mpg loaded on a 3000 mile trip. On hills, we blasted by Fords and Dodges with half the weight. And you can actually have a conversation inside or around a Duramax , while it is running, without having to yell or get shaken right out the door.

I've had nothing but Chevys , now I have a '94 K3500 4x4 454 , 165,000 mi , auto . Pulled 5-9 ton with it about 1/3 of the miles , uses a lot of gas but hasn't caused too much trouble . I'm about due for a new one . Heard good and bad about the Duramax , don't think I can justify the $4000+ for the diesel yet , NOT ENOUGH PROOF . The engine is TOO SMALL should be at least 450cu in don't care what they say & what the figures show . There is one rule that stands out "THERE'S NO REPLACEMENT FOR DISPLACEMENT" . I gotta admit the Dodge is smaller but the 6cyl makes up the difference . Both Dodge and Ford have been proven over lots and lots of miles , they have probably had their problems but GM's diesel has a long way to go before I'd buy one .If I were to get a new truck I think it would be the GM 8.1 gas or if diesel would be a Dodge . Sorry GM people ,including myself, but just not enough proof yet . JIM

I bought a new duramax with the allison auto last year. As a long time chevy driver I thought it was a great truck, for about 4500 miles. At 4650 miles it cracked a head, dealer fixed it, at 6700 miles, cracked another head, dealer fixed it again, had it back for 3 days, spun a rod bearing, dealer said it was from antifreeze in the oil when the head cracked. New long block under warranty. Got it back and sold the piece of &^%*&^ . Only lost $9000. in 8100 miles. Chalk this up as a learning experience. I bought a lo-pro Navistar with the 466 and allison and rear air ride. Should have done this in the first place, it was only $4500 more than the chevy.
