I was talking with a puller the other day and we were discussing rules on RPM. One thing led to another and he started to tell me one of those "I know this guy" stories. The shorten version was that this friend of his was turning his Farmall M a little under 4000 rpm. Kind of have my doubts about the longevity of the motor but who knows. I was wondering what the max rpms you pull if you are not governed by a rule like 10% or something. I have turned my G at 2000 rpms for a short period of time but have decided to limit my rpms to no more than 1300-1400 max. Any thoughts on your brand/model of tractor?

I have a cockshutt 40 that i have been pulling for the past 12 years. The only thing I have done to the motor since the rebuild in 89 is that I took 3 of the 6 gov. weight's out and put a tighter spring on.This allows the motor to turn 3200 rpm's put a peice of wire on the spring and it will turn 5000 plus.

I pull a cockshutt 50 bored and head work no stroke and I run it at about 4600. It's been pulling at that for about 4 years never overhauled it yet?

There is a guy here that runs a WC at 5000 rpm with lots of compression. He does well but split the block once from end to end.

Told one of the guys we pull with that my stock M ran 2000 rpm turned clear out. He just raise his eyebrows. Don't really like to do that though. She shakes and vibrates. Only suppose to run 10% or 35% anyway.

I WOULD LIKE TO SEE THAT 70 PULL, IT MUST BE UN REAL. IF THE FLYWHEEL CAME OFF AT 4000 RPM, HOW MANY MILES WOULD IT GET BEFORE IT STOPPED? HAHAHA

I know what U mean MM.. I headr about a flywheel coming off a JD once and ran down the track and out the door... hahaa.. On the 70 he is running a billet whywheel, so it should not come apart.. and he has is shielded with thicker material.. It is an ugly tractor.. but suppose to be wild ride.. has to get the RR's up there to get a smoother flow of air.. Those 2 bangers, sure have a long time of delay between the firing of the 2 cylinder, until #1 comes back around to fire again...

Later.

I had Tech in my class a few weeks ago that used to pull an old MM years ago.. I think he was turning 7000-8000 R's with the old girl.. I can't remember the size.. U or UB.. or something like that, it was a 4 cylinder.. Of course.. it was turbo charged, burning.. Alcohol.. running about 75Lbs of boost.. I think he was pulling in the Pro-Stock class.. JDGnut

We ran a JD 60 at 100% + over on rpm's for more than 20 years and never had any engine problems. There were also several other tractors such as G's, M's, etc. running just as wild.
