Ok its bored 125 over HC pistons. Heaved shaved to the eye brows Carb has the jets bored out. Its had it all done except the jerry's manifold and the nice crum exhaust which are coming. But my question is my RPM's are dropping to quickly when its to get under the load of the sled. It won't lug very well. What could be the problem? We are stumped. Please email me at shortyp2004@msn.com or write here. Thanks in advance!!

Phillip, I also have my "G" bored .125 and high rise pistons, stock cam, and trimed the front of the block a smidge. It will not run or pull well on the fuel the stock car racers use, nor will it lug well on pump unleaded gasoline. I found that it runs pulls, and lugs the best on 100 octane aviation gasoline. You can get av-gas at your local airport. You may have to replace the main nozzle in your carb back to original specs. Hope this helps you. Dale

An all-fuel carb runs rich with gasoline already. Gasoline is thinner/less viscous. And less dense causing the carb float bowl level to be higher.

Too rich on the main jet adjustment?? Yep, float could be off, and running out too, or flooding it. Buick,, remeber that G i was tellin you about?? It was way too rich,, even though it revfved up, idled well, but as soon as I lugged it on the dyno, it popped n died. started leaning it out,, ran beautifully. Best darn dead weight G JD I have seen for a stocker!!!!! ! LOL!! Phillip, what does the plugs look like after it lugs, or powers out???? ChadS

From what I hear, it almost sounds like the governor linkage needs to be re-set...

Does it "Snap" the throttle open at the first sign of a load..?? It should... Does it smoke black smoke..??--it shouldn't...

After the first pull with it we notice we werent getting enough fuel. so we took it our man that help build dads JD 60. he bored the jets out a little of the carb to get more fuel. There is no snap come to think of it. We haven't noticed black smoke either. But this is a new problem to us. Dads tractor runs like a top. We arent new to pulling tractors. Dads done it for 20 yrs and me since i was 5, now i am 18. Well i watched at 5 yrs old. But this is the first time its left us to scratching our heads. Maybe i am just dumb too lol. thanks. We noticed it ran better on 110 octane racing fuel than reg 93 octane fuel. So go figure lol

If you don't have extreme compression or "hot spots" in the combustion chamber, you shouldn't need 110... It may actually be giving you a somewhat slower "burn"..effectively retarding the point of max pressure.. You might need to back the timing down a couple of degrees.. it makes a World of difference on the JD's wheather or not the governors "Snap" the carb open at the 1st sign of a load...you can't aford to loose any RPM while it goes to work..!! You may need to adjust the throttle rod to the governor spring...it is usually about 1/2 hole short to be sensative to loads.. Hope ya get that Big Boy Winning...!! Someday I hope I get a chance to cut some valves for one....I'd like to see what a difference it makes in a real puller..!! I reshape and polish them, then open the seat area just under the valve--making a Venturi effect between the valve and seat...seems to make a huge diference in the breathing even without a new cam... 4 to 5 angles on the valve (fully contoured and polished), and 4 angles on and under the seating cut... Match-port and some minor intake and exhaust cleanup seems to geterdone..!!

it sounds like it is too rich.you havent really increased the air flow yet you drilled jets out in carb( I dont quite get that)I would try to lean it out a bit. maybe go back to stock carb. contrary to popular belief, lean is hot( more power)rich is cold( less power)not so lean as to burn parts or stumble when throttle is snapped open.also in my opinion jerrys manifold will make problem worse, just too big for stock displacement.I would also try to open valve lash a tad maybe .005"to .010".

Give us a little more info. What kind of cam do you have. how do you have it timed, is the dist. advancing as it should?

Ok. it has a stock cam. We haven't changed it to a distrubutor. Its still a magneto. We haven't stroked it either. Its a 48 G. I believe the cams in those are f900. I hope this helps!. We are running 16.9x34's as well. When you need it to lug out it chokes under the load of the sled. So far we have one 3rd and 2 fifths. But it has us stumped.

i have a g and did the same thing the more i pull it the more power i get. i have 14.9 38s on it. 6500 in first gear, it does ok. get a flat head it will help some. rev it up as much as the pull will let you that will help and i use 94 octane sunoco and it runs good on that. put it on a dyno and chech the timing and carb adjustment with running good luck.
