What would be the best choices of tractor models to be competitive in stock condition? What is not generally competitive? I would be most interested in the lighter weight classes. I don't believe I would want an over 5500 pound tractor.

I have never pulled before.

If you are talking stock, than you will be pulling against Stock tractors I guess, so here's my thoughts. A good WD45 is never a bad choice. Also a late model JD A with the straight 6 speed tranny. I wonder if a DC case would make that weight. if it would, they are also strong pullers. Those are a few models that are strong in the stock mode. However if you decide to do alot of modifications an oliver 70 rowgrop, or Farmall H would do nicely, and parts are more available aftermarket. Just my thoughts.

I think a cockshutt 40 would be very competitive in the stock class in 4500 and 5500 what you need to do is get a gas and do some modifications to it like take the sleeves out and put 50 pistons in it and some carb work and electronic igniton and right there you have 60-65 hp . Witch would get you right there and they also got a granny gear in them also that is reallly slow. And in the 4500 and 5500 you should be able to run 2nd gear on a good track. The 2nd gear is about 3 mph. So hope it helps .

A D-19 crank in a 40 or 50 block, get your compression up, and get a carburetor to feed it is good for 80 horse. I think what gear you can pull in depends on the sled and track. I used to pull a tractor with the setup I mentioned that wouldn't pull 2nd gear in the 6,000 lb. class on 18.4-38s unless the track was really loose or really hard and slick on top. On the other hand the D-19 motor will bolt up with minor modifications, and with some LP pistons, head work, and a carb. to feed it is good for 95 horsepower.

Dick doesnt konw anything. Most of time all the people at the scaled do is tell you to rev your motor and hold it open. if it sounds like it is about the right rpm you pass unless they have a tahc waiting for you.

I pull a cockshutt40 with the 3 9/16 overbore in the 5500to 9500 pound class. In the 5500 class it is competitive against the higher horse tractors. Whit 18.4*38 tires I can run 3rd on most tracks and 2nd in the 6500.The only thing that has been mod. is the pistons and a good valve job. Got into pulling for under $2500.00. between tractor, tires, and parts.

Pulling the sleeves out and putting 50 pistons in won't work with out some costly machine work if even then. The 230 Buda has wet sleeves and the 273 Buda has no sleeves. The 230 can be bored too atleast 3-9/16 and the 273 stock bore is 3-3/4. Alot of people are using the 262 Allis combine engine which is 3-9/16 bore and 4-3/8 stroke.
