60+ HP?

I 've had other posts concerning this topic but here goes. I want to wake my late A (sn 602214)
up. After doing some number crunching, it seems that the stroker combos (cam, carb work, hot ignition, head work, etc.) are making about .16 to
.18 HP/cu. in. A stock model A works out to about
.12HP/cu.in., a 520 John Deere produces .20HP/cu.in. My question is, is it possible to make my A as efficient as a 520? With a .125 overbore @ .20 HP/cu.in. this makes approximately
65 HP. Which is about the number I'm looking for.
I know there are tractors making more power with the DLTX series carb and oem head castings, this leads me to beleive that air flow is not the limiting factor. Can new millenium cam, ignition, and air flow work get me where i want to be? lets hear from some Div I & II pullers with standard stroke A's am I missing something?

Got a 730 LP and I can't keep the traction... got an A and I can't keep the traction... got an MT and it pulls with heart, all the way down in low gear and wins ribbons and pleases the crowd. I painted it with a brush so I think all the gals feel sorry for it, but they love its spirit. My suggestion to you is keep the traction with your A in the 6,000 lb class, and build the engine up until you lose traction again. Have fun.

Well, if an AC-WD-45 can pull nearly 6,000 lbs--on 226 cu. in. ( Nebraska tests )... Then an "A" with 321 cu. in. SHOULD have the potential to do at least as well..! Admittedly the WD had 1,900 lbs added to EACH rear wheel, BUT..... ... I Have a WD-45, and I can assure you it is a FULL 4-14" plow tractor.!! NOW, let us have some ideas...!!!!! I have a JD "60", and have the SAME question....!! Ron.

I don't think you'll get that much HP with a stock head, but you probably can with a Heisler head. The reason a 520 gets more HP/CU IN is because it turns more RPM than an A. Airflow is the key to making horsepower, but don't get too wild with the cam. Around 210 deg@ .050 would be a good place to start. Mike

I think you are a decimal point shy of the point {as in .20 hp per cid} However I'd have to agree with you that a good running tractor that you can have fun with is all you need. Later Greg H.
