Doing some investigative work for possible winter project.

What is the Max bore you can get out of an H block and still safely run water in it - need not have sleeves. Not looking to stroke the crank - maybe offset grind if someone has a good combination figured out with a cheap set of rods to slap in there. Any thoughts?

THanks!

We are running a 350 block and it is now 4 1/8" bore with a 6 inch stroke. Alot of modifications to the block had to be done to get it to this though.

Hey M6, ever have one of those days nothing goes right, computer is having trouble with cookies and won't let me use my handle. Anyhow, I guess I'll just have to let my H at home for sure now, LOL. You have some tuff tractors to compete with and I'm sure that an H will be no different. Is it going to be the same one you had at the fair this weekend? We are at 3 3/4 on ours, but I know you can go alot bigger. I was once told there is one around the valley thats bored to 4 1/4. I don't know if there is any truth to that, but if there is I'm sure it's hard blocked. Take care.

It would go into the H we pulled this weekend. That one runs okay - just doesn't seem to have enough guts though. The past 2 years we've had tremendous hooks in 5500 lb class at West End with that H, but died at the end both years. More horses might just make us spin out easier and not get ahold of the track as well - just frustrating to have such a hold on the track and die and end up just out of the money by a place or two. We just haven't been 100% satisfied with that tractor ever since it has been together which is why it still hasn't seen a good paint job in 5 years :)

Bore your block out to 4 inches and put a set of SM sleeves cut off in it. Makes a good motor with good power.

You ask for thoughts, so I will give you mine. Pull the sleeves and have the cylinders sonic checked for thickness in different areas. It"s hard to actually figure the thickness because of casting flaws and electrolysis on a 50 year old engine. Or you can just take someones word, bore it, and hit water.

Yep, went through that problem on our first H engine, got 3 cyls bored, number 4 cracked on the last pass of the boring bar. I say, as long as the block is is pristene condition, 3-13/16 on a dry sleeve H block, and still have alot of meat left over,,, the C175 (late 350) blocks can go even bigger. I dont think 4 inch is possible on these without sleeves though,, but there is a piston that wil work for 4 inch, stock stroke if you can get the block to hold the bore size with no leaking. Chad
