On a 10,000# stock first gear pull, I know that on a hard, sticky track that the 18.4x34 tires would probably be the best tire for this tractor. My question is, would the 23.1x26's be much better on a sandy or soft type of track ? Does anyone have actual first hand experience with these combinations?

Thanks to all for the replies. I totally agree about the taller tires on a good track. My tractor was available originally with either tire and some of the tracks we pull on are temporarily made in indoor arenas with soft sandy type conditions and little prep other than a good wetting and rolling. I can hook up with 80 HP on a good clay track and lift my front wheels, but on the soft ones I spin alot. I was just wondering if it would be worth the trouble to swap or not.

M-M GB tractors had either tire as an option. They 26" were used with cane tread. I have a set in my yard and they are MUCH shorter than 34". I have not pulled my 34" yet, but would like 20.8x34" to measure. Deep Tread Firestones stand taller too!

The 23.1x26 is a heavy load/floatation tire intended for very loose soil surfaces. Great for old 840 Deere earth movers. And old 55 to 75HP western tillage tractors pulling tillage tools in loose soil without duals. Or in riceland mud.
Ive seen 23.1x26 tires on a hard track in the 10,000lb class that no matter the tire pressure. The last outer 2" of every tread bar would not touch the track.
Pulling with tires the tallest legal size in the class seems to work best.

Read the rules carefully. Our club here in Ohio has a 20.8 tire width limit. Some antique clubs are very restrictive on tire sizes allowed for each of their classes. Don

I think that the 23.1 x26 never hook up maybe because they are so short. I would go with the 18.4s

We have a 560 with 18.4x34's and 14.9x38's and pull with the big tires, we have always placed in front of them. Theres more weight per square inch in the samller tire, even though there is more tire footage with the biggies. It's a gamble, but I would not go big! Chad Mathison

Ive got a friend with a JD 830 with 18.4x34 and he has pulled against several 830's and other tractors with 23.1x26's and no matter what the track is like he has always beat them. So i would suggest to go with the 18.4x34. Hope this helps
