Looking for the best choice of tractor for 6500lb. to 8500lb. classes. I know both of these tractors can be run in these classes. Any opinions and or ideas for getting one down that far. Thanks in advance.

If the 820 is a pony start, it is going to weigh around 8200 to 8400 lbs before you start chopping. The 720 pony start will weigh between 7500 and 7800 lbs. I know the 820 has a huge weight up front that has to weigh close to 200 lbs. If you are pulling that light, it could most likely be removed. Electric start on either model should shave 250 to 300 lbs.

I have never been a fan of pulling these big diesels light. That may just be because I have never done it successfully, but have been fairly successful with the 720 between 9000 and 10500. My brother's 80 seems to not be real happy until it gets closer to 12000. Different tracks and conditions will net different results of course.

I don't know if you could somehow mount pressed steel wheels on the 820, but the 720 could easily be done to save several hundred pounds. Another spot would be to remove the pto and also the hydraulic valve box and pump.

Pulling that big heavy fuel tank, cooling fan/rad/frame work and aircleaner. And replacing them with light weight units would about get an 820 into the 8000 class as well.

I have pulled against an 820 in the 7500lbs class.. but B&D said.. it takes some work.. I"m sure there are more out there.. I have seen some at Tunica, and in the NATPA that pull that have had a ton of work done to get them lighter... Some one made a good point about the tracks..
The weight advantage sure goes to the 70-730"s.. but starting with that 8in stroke.. makes a big difference.. (not saying you cann"t build a good 70-730).. but we"re taking about round 100cubes... Look at some of the pic that are posted from the different pulls, and get some ideas... If you are going to go that far with a tractor... you might as well use weld on plates for the axles... (on GPower"s R, he pulled the axles and cut a keyway, and used U-bolt hubs... They came out very nice... )
Good Luck
