My wife and I have attended several classice/antique tractor pulls over the past several weeks and we are ready to take the plunge to get involved. Everyone seems so nice and it is seems like good clean fun. I have some mechanical ability and have located a Farmall "M" that would seem to fit the bill. Does anyone know of a website or publication that might lend a good explanation of how to prepare a tractor for a "first pull"? I have read about the rules and the wheelie bars etc...I have this in hand, but what are some basic things I should do to the tractor to prepare to pull? I don't want to embarass myself too badly at my first pull. By the way, I am in northwest Missouri in the Richmond area and looking forward to going to Hamilton this weekend.

Start by getting and I&T book for your tractor and doing a good inspection and tune-up on it. That will begin getting you familiar with it and give you a good working knowledge of what you're dealing with. After that, start talking to other pullers, and don't be afraid to ask anything. There's no such thing as a stupid question. And 95% of guys will bend over backward to help you.

the Kinkead brothers - Allen and Aaron. I think they"re from your area. Good pullers and all-around nice guys.

The rules published by the NATPA association, pretty much covers everything. I am sure that local clubs rules may very. Here is their site.

I hope someone can answer with your information.

Along the same lines, I WISH there were a good website that would contain a page SPECIFICALLY with a "calendar of events". I note that many of the national type pulls are well publicized, but many of the local "obscure" pulls are not. They may be well known to locals or veterans-but not novices. We need a good common calendar posting site.

Also-I"d like to note that I"ve emailed a few "contacts" that do have their pulls publicized and mostly they do NOT answer emails. Looking for rules on their pulls. Not a good way to get more pullers, I don"t think. I realize that not answering emails is a common problem.

I have a up-coming events board on my site, but it is left up to the pullers to post the pulls. If you would like to post your events I will send you the link. E-mail me!

Any good Pulling How To books available? in reply to Will, 08-19-2004 20:23:07
I have about the same questions. I already have several antique tractors that I'd like to test against others. I understand that rules will vary from pull to pull as to what is stock and allowed, but I was hoping for more general information about weighting the tractor, tire pressures, pulling strategy, etc. Is there anything out there - - -

About the only thing I can tell you is do a whole lot of watching and asking questions. I've been pulling for years and I still practice this. There are people who are glad to help, and those who aren't.
