Building a 51 G and have heard mixed emotions about a different grind for the cam. The tractor is bored .090" with high compression pistons. Is having the cam ground worth it on an engine that turns at stock RPM? Will I loose any low end torque? Would I be better off just getting the carb "tuned up", or both. I don't have much experience with this sort of thing so thanks for any info.

I would say it is worth it. I rebuilt my JD A with a power-block and high compression pistons. Sent my cam out to ROBERT'S Carb and had them do what they call a "competition grind" to my cam. Don't have access to a dyno, but she has never run out of power and lugs very well. Have pulled against some heavily modded Farmall 'M's and won.

When you got your cam from Robert"s, did you get a cam card with it or did he tell you where to degree it in at?? Did he ask anything about your engine or is what he has a generic "competition grind" that is "one size fits all"?
Thanks, Drew

He sends a degree chart and the specs on how to set the cam up, with the ground cam

Go to Berry Cam in Lester Prairie, MN. Tell him exactly what is in your engine, what you want to do and what you want out of it. There is no such thing as a stock cam being just as good as a reground cam. There is always room for improvement.
